Another question about surf fishing in Los Angeles

I have been doing a lot of ready and have a question about fly fishing in the surf. What length of leader do you all use? How about size? I was think of using about 5 feet of 8lb mono for a leader. Would this work or should I use a tapered leader like I do when trout fishing?

As for fly line, I have the RIO multi-tip system for my 8wt, so I thing that should work for me. That way I can hit the fish from the top and the bottom.

I can not wait until I get to Los Angeles to try some surf fishing.

Thanks for the help.

Paul,
Jay Murakoshi uses a tandem fly set up using a small metal ring to tie off the dropper…VERY successfully may we add.
3’-5’ leaders work fine for us and short is better usually.

I use 4-6 feet of straight mono - no taper - for most situations. I just use line off of the spools that I use to fill my spinning and baitcasting reels.

Thanks for the info. I have a spool of 8lb florocarbon mono. that needs to be used and I was just going to take that with me.

Is there a diagram on how Jay does his tandem rig? I did not see anything on his web site.

Do I have to worry about toothy critters in the Marina Del Ray and Santa Monica areas? I will just be fishing from shore.

We have 'cuda here but you won’t encounter them in the surf zone. No need for wire. Halibut have a nice set of teeth but you don’t need wire for them - just don’t grab one by the lip.

I will keep that in mind. Thanks.
