Another new tyer questions: Abbreviations?

I’ve figured out a few, like CDC, FEB, and PT. How about SBS? Are there any other abbreviations I should know about?

Step by step

Rats! Been tying longer than I care to recall. Come to think of it, I don’t. Anyway, I thought I knew most tying abbreviations and acronyms. What the heck is ‘FEB’ besides an abbreviation for February? I just know I’m gonna kick myself when I find out, lol.

9DH.

Something else for Allan to wonder about.

It used to be that coolness in tying was measured by how many bugs you knew the Latin names of, and how easily you could drop those names into a conversation. Then there was the “copy the ancients EXACTLY” phase. Now it seems to be acronyms. WTF?

I will just go fishing.

PS, for those who will read too much into this post, perhaps the joke doesn’t carry without knowing me well.

Does WTF mean Well Tied Fly? Actually, I doubt it!

I have never been cool or worried too much about it. I still think the best advice I ever heard about fly tying was from Don Barrett (I hope I got the name right) who is the godfather of north GA trout fishing. He told the group at a seminar I was attending “The idea is to make the fly look like a bug a trout eat not some other guy’s fly.” I usually follow direction as close as the materials on hand allow. But then I live in a state of SNAFU.

Okay. FEB = “Furled extended Body

      9DH = ?

WTF = Well, politically it has been said, "Win The Future". Dave said, "Well Tyed Fly". Many accept it to mean, "What The F***"(sounds like quack, lol).

Most recently I've been reading some military books and, to be honest, I'm abbreviated and acronymed out so I'm not going to go into any more of them related to tying and/or fly fishing.

Allan

The Military has so many acronyms, they actuall had to come out with a whole book of nothing but them and what they mean.

The one that causes me some mild amusement, from my military days, is the term U.S. meaning “Unservisable, broken”. Of course many don’t realise what they are saying when they use it!

GRHE comes immediately to mind. Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear

ESL - Egg Sucking Leech - for whatever reason, i have seen that one more than a few times.

CDL - coq de leon. A type of feather that is commonly used for tailing material, is sometimes used for hackle, and rarely used to form the abdomen of very small flies.

How about a couple fairly recent FOTWs from the Home Page -

There are also several threads on this Forum discussing the 90 Degree Hackling technique, which is a very recent innovation that has proven very effective on a number of my original patterns.

The 9DH is not something that is well known at this point, but may gain some popularity over time.

Okay. It appears like everything is getting an abbreviation or acronym. Is it that we (fly tyers) have learned that we can no longer communicate in simple English language? Or, perhaps like the rest of society, we are being sucked into the ‘text’ methodology of technological communication and the brevity created by limiting keyboard strokes and characters per communication. Maybe we’re just going back to secret language and secret handshakes so only the ‘limited few’ can understand the communication.
Regardless the reason, it appears that some of these can be really funny. Maybe we can list some tools, materials, techniques, etc. and an abbreviation/acronym. See what you can come up with and post them. This could get funny:

Here’s one: Silver Holographic Irridescent Tinsel

If you want to see this in its extreme simply head over to SL (Sexyloops). There is probably a thread about the TCS as applied to DHDs, about half the time I’m at a complete loss.

For the list.
DFM - Daylight Fluorescent Material

Fly tying is becoming more ‘FUBAR’ in its designs(patterns), materials, terms, nomenclature, etc. then I care to memorize. Then again, I’m just offering my ‘SWAG’ as I ‘ROTFLMAO’.
