Another knot question?

I asked earlier about tying a whipped loop knot. (thanks to all the replies:)) I just got to thinking, which is dangerous for me;), has anyone ever tried tying a perfection loop in the fly line itself? I’m just curious, but I’m afraid to try it. Afterall curiosity killed the cat, and I don’t want to lose a fish. Like every other angler, I don’t want to lose a fish, however if my wife’s cat don’t quit getting on top of my truck…:stuck_out_tongue:

thanks,
hNt

PS I’m not going to kill my wife’s cat, she’d kill me.

Jason,

I think the diameter of the fly line would make the Perfection Knot much too large to easily go through the rod guides. I am not sure but I doubt the knot would even go through the tip top. I still like and use the short strip of mono attached to the end of the fly line with a Nail Knot and a Perfection Loop in the other end of the mono to attach your leader by loop-to-loop. My mono strip is around 5 to 6 inches long and has not presented me any problems. I do coat the Nail Knot and the Perfection Loop knot with with some sort of adhesive like Loons Knot Sense.

Just my opinions and nothing more…

this will not go through the tip top

but if you cinch down tight enough it should go through

:oops:You ever have one of those moments when you wonder why you want to smack yourself in the side of the head and wonder why you ever asked such a question? I never even thought of it not fitting through the rod tip or the guides.

thanks guys,
hNt

Y’know, every time I see a picture or video of a perfection loop, I see it tied the same way - with the tag end going behind the second loop and in front of the first. Every time I try it that way, the knot comes undone with one yank.

I was taught (at the Orvis School in Manchester, fwiw) that the tag end goes through the second loop, but in front of the first loop. Works for me.

Take it for what it’s worth…

I lost my leader one night while fishing an ocean beach
Turns out my flashlight was dead too.
I knew that I could tie a perfection loop in the dark, so I stripped the tip of my line down to the core, tied a perfection knot, and attatched a new new leader.
It was supposed to be only a temporary fix, but it worked so well that I left it for the rest of the season

I’ve not had that problem but thanks for the tip. How about calling the knot an “improved” perfection loop. I’m going to try that knot the next time I tie a loop in a leader butt.

There are two ways to put the tag end through that second loop. You can go over the first limb and then under the second limb, or you can go under the first limb and and then over the second limb of the second loop respectively. Does it matter?

I use a perfection loop in all of my lines for a loop to loop connection with my furled thread leaders and on the tippet for a loop to loop connection there. The knot is strong but I also add a drop of super glue to the fly line knot just to be safe. Since the fly line is always at least a few inches beyond the tiptop, the knot does not interfere with shooting the line. I tie it by making a figure 8 then wrapping the tag behind the upper loop and then in front of it and then pull the lower loop over the tag and through the upper loop.

While on the water the other day, I noticed my line was almost broken just behind the loop. I cut it off and tied a perfection loop to get me through the day. Worked fine. Never have a need to reel the flyline into the tip.

Welded loops are easy and neat… They are the way to go…

Has there been any write-up done on them here?
