On Page 2 of John’s book “Fishing Bamboo” he says “I mean, people tend to get the politicians and the fishing tackle they deserve”.
I just love that line. I had to go back and look it up after another thread out here.

Gierach wasn’t the first to use the part of that line … the part about politicians. He just added about the fishing tackle. Oh, and while I believe the former I do not believe the latter.

Anybody know why on the cover of Gierach’s latest book, there is a profile of a guy with a spinning rod?
The early first printed copies show a profile of a spinning rod. I understand Gierach was not amused by that. He demanded a change immediately and the publisher obliged. The copies being put out now do not have the spinning reel. That doesn’t mean there are not quite few copies out there with the spinning reel…
I have also heard that the copies with a spinning reel are being sold for $75.00 at a shop in Denver. No proof, just rumor.
I’m keeping my copy with the spinning reel.
That’s quite an oversight with the cover.
Actually the ‘oversight’ on the cover photo is more common than one might expect. People who do not fly fish do not speak the language and make very dumb mistakes. One of the more common ones I see is mis spelling of fly fishing words…like leider, lieder for leader. Ferrule is another dandy.
JC and I said when we started FAOL no one will do work on FAOL who is not a fly fisher.
It has worked quite well…so far.

Back in the 70’s “Sperry Topsiders” published a catalogue with cover showing a shot from the top of the mast into the cockpit of a large sail boat. If you looked real close you could see a crew member relieving himself behind the main sail!! Maybe they needed a wet deck!?
That’s what comes from looking at a 35 mm negative and then blowing it up to 8x10 for publication!!
I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!
