Another gar trip

Met up with my brother at the secret stream for some gar and smallie action.

We each caught a couple of gar and then we decided to try the bass.

When my brother caught this one, the first pic came out blurry. So I took another, but he was looking at the fish when I took it. I said, “hey! Look at the camera!” So he did.

After catching a few gar, we tried the bass, but they didn’t cooperate. So we ended up doing some “fishing” of a different kind. When culminated in a streamside crawfish boil.

Delicious and nutritious. Oh yeah, we sucked the heads too…

Looks like everyone had fun. Great job on the Gar. I’ve managed to get a few to take but never been able to get a good hook set to get into that tough jaw. Well done to you and your brother.

Ahh… The gar we caught today came on hookless flies. Mine came on a fly tied from a piece of unraveled nylon rope. My brother’s gar fly is several strands of antron, each tied in knots in several places.

Saw the picture and info on the “rope” fly on one of the other Gar posts you made. My only problem is I’ve never intentionally targeted Gar. I’ve had a few incidental takes during some of my smallmouth trips. I suppose I should keep a couple of “Rope” flies in the box just for these chance meetings. Enjoyed the posts, keep up the good work.

I got into a few of these toothy critters lately too. I generally do use hooks when I fish for them because I hate it when something else big jumps on the rope fly and there is nothing you can do about it. I like using long articulated flies and a low sideways hookset seems to work best for me. I got this one Sunday on the Caney Fork while trout fishing. We saw a bunch of them together up at the surface and broke out the streamer rods on them.
