Well it is once agian time for our Annual Sowbug round-up swap. For anyone new to this swap, this swap is open to people ATTENDING the event. This swap allows for some of our FOALers to put a face with a handle or name. We will meet at my tying station on Sat morning to visit and swap flies. I am going to open this to the frst 15 people who Chime in, with 3 spots being filled all ready. Flies will be due at the event, which I believe is the weekend of March 15th.
Toby,
Count me in. Do not know what I will tie but bet I can come up with something before March.
Jeff & I will arrive on Sat evening before the SB. Already booked at the Wildcat Resort, same room as always. Plan on fishing Sunday through Wed eve then will be manning the Conranch Hackle booth.
I bet it will be a sweet looking bug, looking forward to seeing it, Leonard you have been a staple of this swap, I have no problem with you sending flies in, as long as everyone is OK with it.
We have another entry. Arnie is jumping in with a sowbug pattern that I bet will make a few lips sore! We are going to have some great patterns put of this swap
Thanks for calling my attention to this swap. I’ll jump on in with Goddard Caddis, probably in a size 14 or 16. Look forward to seeing everyone at Sowbug again this year.
Glad you can join us again this year! If you have not got one of Mike’s caddis you are in for a treat! I will leave this open for a few more days then call it good
Well we have a even dozen and I have not had a post for a few days so I am going to close the swap. Thanks to all that have participated look forward to seeing everyone at the bug!!
Toby,
Tying the flies today. Plan on a soft-hackle midge. It outfished the standard Zebra Midge by at least 2 to 1 last year during the show. Knowing some of the other swappers, and feeling a little guilty tying something so simple, I’ll throw in a parachute Adams for an indiciator.
I made a reservation at Denton Ferry campground for the week of the show. If weather permits, hope to arrive on the 9th. Fishing was good during low water right behind the trailer last year. If you have time to hook up (pun intended) for some fishing, send a PM and I’ll give you my cell phone number. Otherwise, drop by any time. The coffee pot is usually on by sunrise.
Hoping for a good time and successful show,
Arnie
Just wanted to thank Toby for putting the swap together, and all the participants for some great flies and cool ideas. Looking forward to doing it again in '09.
Arnie
I enjoyed tying for this year’s swap. I didn’t have the time to tag the second fly I put in the baggie with the Goddard Caddis, namely the Goddard Smut. So, I’m posting the recipe below:
Hook: Wide Gape 1x Long 16-20 Dry Fly (up eye is preferred but hard to find)
Body: Black dubbing tied short – think about tying a fly two sizes smaller than the hook calls for.
Hackle: Two wraps of black
Thread: black 6/0 or 8/0 (140 or 70 denier)
This fly produces well when see fish rising/porposing but can’t see anything hatching – some people refer to this as smutting – fish taking flies low in or just under the surface film. I caught a good number of fish on this in February on the Norfork, as well as closer to home on the Guadalupe River – it’s a quick tie and is going to become a staple in my box.
