An interesting article on Using Google Earth

Found this while randomly surfing. Makes for some good info!

Being an all round geek, I use Google Earth a LOT. I even have a version of it on my iPhone and can use it up around the Scout camp even though I have no cell phone coverage up there. I installed a wireless network that covers most of the camp and can get to the internet even if I can’t make a phone call. They were going to trench fiber in at a cost of nearly $30,000.00 and the wireless network covers more area and only cost them around $750.

I also have a GPS app that I can move the tracks directly to Google Earth or Maps on the phone or email to myself for use at home on the desktop.

It’s cool stuff!

Cool stuff indeed! I sure do wish there was a Google Earth app available for the Blackberry. I use Google Maps quite a bit on it but earth would be ideal! Instead I use it to do some FAOLing, in fact, I am sitting in the hot tub on the Blackberry right now. Cool stuff indeed!

They do have one. Visit m.google.com on your BB and you can download an app there.

The unfortunate thing about the app though is that it does not save the maps, so if you are in the backcountry it’s not very useful. sigh

I tried Google Earth, but found that it was hard to follow the streams when it ran under cover of trees.
I got Delorme Topo USA software and loaded it on my laptop, added the USB port GPS sensor and have a great topo map that shows all of the streams, trails, terrain and roads. I can look at a certain area in detail, make notes and plan a route to the spots and save them. Put your laptop in your car and turn on the GPS and you can get a turn by turn to get there. Plus if you want to really get into it you can down load any of the notes, routes, etc to one of their small hand held units to take into the field with you.
If you want to take a look at it here is a link. http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtdItemDetail.jsp?item=29367&section=10050

Used it recently to scout out a stream I had never been on and to see availability of take out points for a kayak.

I have never used Google maps for fishing specifically, however I use it regularly for researching hunting grounds.

It is a great tool. I like to make color printouts and laminate them so that I can carry them into the field with me. I usually carry a marker in case I want to make notes on the printouts.
