Amber wings

This is a small member of the dragonfly family (odonatae) that spend much of their life cycle in or near water.Amberwings hunt near the surface and are often preyed upon by many species of fish.

Nice realistic fly. What size hook and, if you actually have used it for trout, how large of a tippet do you use. Looks like any tippet too small will furl like crazy.

Allan this is tied on a size 12 dry fly hook. I doubt with these wings that it will be easy to cast very well. I plan to dap with it . The siloette it throws on the water and the color might be enough to convince a fish it’s a spent and easy meal.

Fred that is amazing, you are an extremely talented tyer!!!

Nice fly. You have matched the dragonfly very well.

Thanks Dave and stumphunter

Fred,

I just happened to notice, maybe it’s the photograph, that the actual insect has 2 wings and yet your imitation has 4. Any reason for this or am I not seeing the full set of 4 wings on the actual insect? And yes, I suspect you’ll have to dap that fly because with those wings it’ll helicopter your tippet like crazy.

Allan

Hi Allan the insect has four wings also. The way it is positioned in the photo obscures the two left wing behind the right ones.
Fred

Wow… great fly Fred!
