The season ends in 2 weeks here in the sierra mountains of California.
We’re getting our first big rain of the season this weekend and it’s suppose to rain all weekend. My 2 job work schedule won’t allow me to go fishing during the week so it’s now, in the rain, or stay home with the dog and tie flies in front of the wood stove.
So, am I hard core enough to go out and fish anyway? I’m tempted, so tempted.
Should I stay or should I go? Let’s decide in the next hour.
But I hooked a big trout. I was fighting him and trying to guide him around a row of rocks in the river when he shook off the fly. He hit an ant fly that I was fishing wet under the surface. After that I couldn’t get the fish to pay attention to anything I presented to them. I tried more ants, some pheasant tail nymphs, a copper john, even a small wooly bugger. But they ignored me.
I did, however, discover that my rain jacket leaks at the neck. The top half of my sweatshirt is soaking wet. That’s a good excuse to buy a new GoreTex jacket.
In any case, I fished for what felt like a couple of hours maybe more. John’s right. Just bundle up and do it.
Good for you !! Finding a great excuse to get a new goretex jacket doesn’t come along every day !!
Hooking up with a nice fish was just icing on the cake.
John
P.S. We’re having real “weenie weather” up here right now. That stuff you got today will probably be here in a day or two. Think I’ll stay in and tie flies ??
P.P.S. PM me with your address and I’ll send you a fly that will work for any trout in any moving water in any weather, guaranteed.
We are still waiting for the rains to come. It really should get the salmon moving. Bring it on. I won’t be kept off the water by some rain. Too much work, but never rain.
