what type of flies would you tie with alpaca
chris

Dan,

Will this wool require some processing before it can be used?

Dean

Sounds like fun. Can I get in?

Semper Fi!

I’m using the fleece right out the bag. They clean up the Alpaca before shearing. I think you can tie any type of fly you think up. I’ve already tied a couple flies that were killers for the bluegill last night. Ladyflyfisher, gigmaster, and Rick Z you are in. I’ll get your alpaca out in a couple days. Dan

If there is room I’d love to join. Thanks, later.

Dan: There is a fellow from Maine who ties and sells streamers made of llama hair (he also sells the hair). He goes under the moniker of Gray Wolf and has a fairly extensive web site. You can visit the site anf get ideas for patterns since llama fur is similar to alpaca. I purchased some of the llama hair about a years ago, it ties very nicely and imparts a lot of movement inthe water. I was under the impression that the fur was harvested much like wool but when I received my order I noticed a patch of hide attached. This makes for cranky llamas!

Dan,

I’ll get in. Doing some research on a pattern.

Dean

EDIT/ Whoops. Sorry I just noticed that you got your five already. /EDIT

Thanks Dan for letting me in on this. I hope no one minds me tagging along.

i’ll have your alpaca out on Saturday. Dan

your fleece is in the mail, sorry for the delay. Dan

Dan,

Got the fleece today. Now the experiment begins.

I got my fleece today. I was wondering what kind of flies people are thinking about tying with it. I guess I was wondering about leeches or maybe minnows. Any ideas for a new trier?

Got the Alpaca. This stuff is neat. I tied a non-descript streamer with it just to get used to how it handles, and it came out great! I can’t find an exact match for this pattern, so for now I’ll just call it a Black and White Alpaca.

The picture is not so good because I haven’t figured out how to do good ones under artificial lights, but you get the idea, anyway.

Hook: Cabelas Model 40 Streamer, size 8.
Thread: Danville Unicord 3/0, black.
Tail: Red Bucktail
Body: Some kind of pearly-colored tinsel I bought at Wal-Mart last Christmas.
Upper Wing: Black Alpaca
Lower Wing: Cream Alpaca
Throat: Red Bucktail
Eye: Imitation Junglecock

Will this pattern be okay for the swap? I’ll try it out this morning on the mountain and see if anything hits it.

Thanks for the Alpaca. When we use this up, where do we have to go to get more?

Semper Fly!

You can tie any fly you think up for the swap. Gigmaster has a good idea,> I’ve got a mini clouser patern, a nymph is another good idea. how about a dry fly pattern using it as dubbing. Last a mini leech using alpaca instead of goat. You can get alpaca at an alpaca farm. Or If any one is interested I can get more. Just Pm me for the particulars. Dan

Here’s a couple more designs I tried. This stuff is great! I dunno which one to tie for the swap. Anyone have a preference?

Alpaca Darter

Stripe Alpaca

I got the alpaca in today. Great looking stuff.
I will try to get the nymphs back in the mail this afternoon.

Rick

I got everything ready to ship. I went with a skein bugger. I will try to get in mail tomorrow. This was great fun! Thanks so much for the alpaca. I make a clouser with it and had a small LMB hit it last Sunday.

How do you post pictures? Do you have to upload to another site and link?
