close grasshopper…
1-electric dread
2- speed dart
3-cordelito stoned crab
I will use other flys at times but rarely(I do have a soft spot for EP fiber and bucktail as well as schminnows)…these have proven time and time again that no other is needed…not against using others but to me it would be gambling against proven patterns and if I didnt get the fish I would have to wonder if it was the fly…at this point I dont have that worry anymore…sure makes tying easier and plus you wont spend as much $$$$ on materials because you know exactly what you need…I spend enough time at the vise as is…I am a firm believer in presentation taking priority over selection…of course this is just MY opinion but it works for me
Halloween beatdown for the peacocks with special orange speed dart…not any really big ones but all extremely aggressive and hard fighting…I finally wore the 20lb bite tippet after abou 20 peacocks in 2.5hrs…just in time to watch Miami hand the Jets another loss…nice…long live the speed dart!!!

Those are awesome pictures, Cordell!! ![]()
This is a neat take off on tying hair ona jig.Boy,I like this.Guess I know what i
will be tomorrow after I vote.
With what you fish for size of hook is up to the angler.Still have puppy drum(reds)in the ICW up here. Will tie up some #8 fw or10s & see how the spot like
it.I use 10 or 12 tied w/white or red & it works on those buggers.
Thanx for the look.FD
Didnt know there were peacocks in FL.
redfish love it…never had a chance for spot but please post if it works…crappie will knock the fire out of it also
Hey BF,Didnt get any spot.Think they moved since lst post.Thats what they do.What part of the state do you get the peacocks?Never caught any of
those or the tilapia…altho we do eat a lot of the tilapia.
Would April be a good time to fish for the above fish?I have tied a heap of the deep & regular clousers.Building up an inventory of the jig fly in various
colors in the #2 you suggested, dressed heavy & light calftail.I also dont know
beans about the other 2 on your list.Know of any recipes or tutorials on them?
Any info you can send would be appreciated. Not sure if any other spring month is going to be available to me.By your pix I assume you bank or wade
for them?Anyway I gotta go to bed.Way past the bedtime for an old guy. Many thanx,Fred
Peacock bass are in the freshwater canals & lakes from Fort Lauderdale south thru Miami. Not too many on the west coast except for the occasional catch south of Alligator Alley ( I-75 ) in the Glades. If you don’t have too many concerns about toothy alligators, crocodiles or cottonmouths like some Floridian fishers; where wading is always a gamble you’ll be fine, otherwise just bank or boat fishing.![]()
sorry I didnt see your post…got busy for a bit…any time is good time for peacocks except cold weather…even then I have caught some really big ones in 60 degrees but the water was warmer…I just walk the banks and sight cast for them…I do sometimes blind cast which for me is a rare treat…too many cuda and snapper to blind cast in salt…when I walk the banks looking I casr behind me and walk with the rod over the water -trolling I guess…this has produced many fish …I assume by “others” you mean the other flys? anyway its turkey day and raining…I am going to go check for peacocks in your honor at 9am with the Mighty Mighty Speed Dart…it has rained 4 inches since yesterday so the canals here should be raging and deep…I have dirty dozen speed darts in all colors…will try flouro yellow for starters…hopefully I will report back in 3 hrs with loads of pictures…this will keep you busy if bored…non edited
Wow!!!
Wow!!!
Wow!!!
Nice fish! Great video. Brings back the memories! I recognize all those places! ![]()
I can’t believe Tod managed to catch the Peacock that had just broke your line!!
Nice guapotes too!!
water looked great but no fish…got 1 peacock in 2 hrs…me so sad…now to watch football…HAPPY THANKSGIVING
I am late, late, terribly late! But those fish must be powerhouses, they look so big! I take it you are fishing with an eight weight?
Like the speed dart, that is my kind of fly, simply, effective and good looking to boot.
So has it cooled off to a point that the peacock bass are all down for the winter? Or was that a temporary situation around Thanksgiving?
Man, that is just wild. I think the Ks posters are right, that would be a great wiper or white bass fly. Maybe even a striper. Wahoo!
right now its on fire!!! I use a 5wt or a 6wt…mainly a 6wt because of the snook and tarpon I encounter by accident…everytime I have my 5wt I see them…if I use the 6wt I find peacocks…figures, right? speed dart is also killing everything on the flats to the point I quit casting except to exact targeted fish…tied up some mico’ish baby speed darts and the talapia seem to spank them hard…stay tuned for next windy day…
Cant believe Ive been offsite since Nov.Enjoyed the pix.have tyed up a bunch in your colors & others w/kip.Tied them bigger & smaller.Im afraid to count em up.Cold here in NC as it is in FL.There are trout in the ICW but too cold for these old bones. This has been a great thread.Fred
thanks…really cold still!!! tonight is is going to actually freeze for 2 days…raining hard right now as temp is dropping fast…nothing above 40…I have been tying flys like a mad man myself…BTW, I have found out the hard way that it is possible to screw up the mighty mighty speed dart…when I tye them at the 45 degree angle and wrap the calftail a few times near the lead eye I add a small amount to super glue…be very careful that it dont wick up the calf tail because it leaves a hard spot that effectively kills the action as well as blocks the hook point IMO…I am sure they will still work for peacocks but just something I noticed on about the 35th one or so:(
I put a couple of darts in a swap on another site. Sorry about your weather, would you like to trade? this is the first day above 10 this week.![]()
how did people respond to them at the swap? for what its worth, the real name is “The Mighty Mighty Speed Dart” if you want to make the name official…it sounds better:lol: wow, did you notice the number of readers on this thread? scary!!!
I don’t know yet. I just mailed them when I made that post, and they are going to Washington state. I posted some pics and the meister liked those. Everything is frozen here so I haven’t tried one yet. Maybe late this week should be sunny and upper 40s.
while it did hit record low last night the weatherman says slow warm up but back in the 80’s by the weekend…I fear the worst for my peacocks…it hit high 20’s last night…Iguanas are laying everywhere like frozen statues…some even fell over and look fake but all frozen into position…I am sure they will slowly thaw out but not sure
