its been too hot to go to the flats lately plus really high tides with new moon so I have been running the dogs and keeping things in check around here…one day was the black clouser and then the green speed dart…best thing is I am a cast away from the parking lot…
Wow, Cordell, those are some really nice Peacocks! I’m hoping I can make it down again maybe this next Spring! ![]()
Beautiful fish!
Ever catch 'em topwater?
Bob
I never have tried top water…probably not impossible but I think its a tough sell…I see how they rip a lure or plug to do that on TV in the amazon but I have never seen it done…I like the direct approach of attacking them instead of them attacking me…the speed dart is so intrusive they hate it…tomorrow I will try more into the Everglades
What’s the green speed dart & how is it tied ? Might eventually get back to the other side of the state & go after the peacocks again with a new fly that I don’t recall being in Hildagos’ book ! ![]()
the Speed Dart is small basic heavily weighted fly some would even call a jig…it is the fastest fly I have ever used…I mainly use it for deep water on the flats for bones/permit/tarpon/redfish etc…it is meant to be stripped or jigged fast for cruising fish…kind of a clouser but kind of a charley but kind of neither:confused: here is a picture of a few

Thanks for the pics ! Like the heavy eyes to get down deep as Skyline Lake was alot deeper than I thought the Peacocks would be. Can’t match all the colors with calf tail or deer hair, but some of the old polar bear hair colors will suffice.
I have extensive calf tail/kiper tail selection…I buy almost every new color I see because I use it on everything I tie for saltwater…that being said I cant find the one color of pastel orange that is my favorite of all
One day I’m going to move to Florida…
“Martin McFly One day I’m going to move to Florida…”
You and me both McFly, you and me both. I wish I could think of something in Kansas as exotic as Peacocks to trade a trip.
Great fish, they are on my list of fish to catch.
You can always look forward to Wiper season, or if they like to hunt, we have record book whitetail and pheasant. The last two have items that can be used for fly tying as well.

Check out this guy for your kip tail color http://www.crazyanglertackle.com/index.html I’m on a crappie board and tie jigs and this guy’s got more colors of kip tail then I’ll ever own. If he doesn’t have it he’ll probably be able to get it for you.

I’m done catching tilapias. ROR EYE I’ll let you know when I do. I love FL, been there more than once and I don’t even mind the humidity.
I own a Rapala dvd on saltwater fishing and there is an episode that takes place in FL, long story short whenever I crave great fishing I watch it.
Heck, even freswater is better than what I get here.
One day ROR EYE, one day.
the speed dart dished out punishment again this last weekend on baby tarpon…
He’s got them at a good price too. You can have all 31 colors for less than $70. I’ll bet that Speed Dart would be a great fly for Large Mouth or Crappies.
Probably good for white bass too. They love a fast-moving fly.
I will have to try that fly?
Any suggestions on what type of hook you are using? lead eye weight/size? I am assuming you guys are using kip and squirrel from the conversation as opposed to bucktai… Any particular reason?
I fish for stripers up here in New England, and could see getting some great reaction strikes on a fast drop in a moving current.
calf tail to be exact…best hook size is Gamakatsu SC15 #2…it is the only style and size hook I use reguardless of fishing for bones or bass…squirrel isnt the action I was looking for and I have tried it myself…when selecting the calf tail make sure the hair is what you need…I have some that are “softer” than others…the more stiff hair works best…it is important to tye the fly with the hair pointing up at 60 degree angle for uninterrupted sink rate…it will drop 4ft in 2 seconds…also the hair serves as a weed guard when bouncing the bottom…great for kicking up mud puffs but just as deadly stripped in as a minnow…highly erratic action…I designed it to look like a waving flag in the grass on the flats for redfish…since then I have hooked every single fish I have tried for with it, both salt and fresh…all of my fishing is done on 3 flys, period…I think you will slay whatever you want to with them…please post when you do
