Thanks to Donald Nicholson and Ron Eagle Elk, I located and purchased W. H. Lawrie’s book, All-Fur Flies and How to Dress Them, and it is a very good read on tying flies with no hackle and has excellent justification for not using any hackle. I would recommend this book to any fly tier. It is a book for those who pretty well know the art of fly tying. You do not have to be a professional tyer, just know the basics of tying and you will enjoy the book. I have only read half of the book, but, had to stop and tie a fly using all fur for the body and hackle. It is a far cry from being a thing of beauty, like you see on Nicholson’s web site, but, I think it will catch fish and turned out to be easier to tie than what I thought.
The body is made from the soft gray/blue under fur from a muskrat hide and the hackle/legs are made from the darker guard hairs from the same muskrat hide The hook is a Tiemco #2302 in size 14.
Get the book and you will not be sorry. It is an excellent read and will get you to looking at flies in a different “light”.
That’s a good looking fly, and one that I’m sure will be met with enthusiasm by the fish. These fur flies look interesting. Must keep an eye out for Lawrie’s book.
ducks,
quick lets think of a new name for all fur wets, and make it our own style!
we could call them…
FACKLE FLIES! (fur hackle)

Thanks everyone, I love fly tying and this book really has me thinking about new flies to tie.
REE - Thanks for the kind words. A positive comment from you goes a long way with me. Thank you
Jeff - I purchased the book from: www.ananglersbookcase.com It was the 1967 copyright edition. They have several hundred books of fly tying, fly fishing and other subjects related to fly fishing.
JZ - It would be very interesting to hear his comments whether they be negative or positive.
Ducksterman - How about “SFH Wet Flies” (soft fur hackle)?
Well, back to the tying table to see what other creations I can come up with! So little time and so many flies to tie!!
Warren, I’m glad you like the book, all of Lawrie’s books are a good read for a fly fisher.
He was very underrated in his lifetime. He was from my home town, Auld Reekie, otherwise known as Edinburgh.
His books are an important source of historical information on trout flies.
