Alien Fly-FOTW

Great fly! It is different, simple to tie and looks very effective. I like how the hook dangles beneath the float like a Klinkhamer. I am definately going to try a few of these during cricket and hopper season. I will try a “Baby Alien” trailed behind an “Electric Cricket” too. That will surely slay them down on the farm…

I agree, the fly looks great. I plan on tying some up as soon as i get some black foam. It looks like it might also work well with different colors. If you using it for panfish i would give it a try now i live in Indiana and i was slaying them last weekend on a hopper pattern. I even caught a bass and two crappie to go along with my bluegill.

Great fly. I would like to teach this in my fly tying class in the next few weeks, but where can I get Rainey’s Float Foam? We don’t have any craft stores in a 100 mile radius, so any websites would be great. I did a search, but couldn’t find anything. Any help would be great!!

Great looking fly. It certainly looks a killer!

ranchwife, try Dan Bailey at [url=http://www.dan-bailey.com:5bdd3]http://www.dan-bailey.com[/url:5bdd3]
or Hook and Hackle from the sponsors page

Thanks flyangler! I checked Hook and Hackle first but they didn’t have it - I forgot about Dan-Bailey’s (they did have it)!

I think there are very few things in fly tying that are really new – that looks like one of them. Very inventive. I happen to have some Rainey’s float foam and I’m going to give it a try.

Why not punch out some foam cylinders from black flip flops or other colors too?

Phil,

That’s exactly what I would do for the foam. But I don’t have the color black in my cactus chenille so I’ll have to get some .

“Flip a fly”

By the way, at the NW Tying Expo in Eugene someone was tying Richard Komar’s “Texas Bullfrog” [it’s in the FAOL Fly of the Week series]…he had a glass jar to demo how it rides in the water…really looks good and a fun ty …Thanks, Richard

Hello All,

Thank you for taking the time to view the Alien.

One flyfisher from Alabama said it is one ugly fly. True. He also mentioned that the hook riding down below the water should aid immensely in more hookups, especially bream, which tend to strike directly from below. That low riding hook also attributes to the effectiveness of the Texas BullFrog, another FAOL fly.

True, any foam will work when it is cut in that shape. The flat front acts like a popper head. Most success has been with black. I think the fish home in on the shape rather than the color.

I like that idea of displaying the BullFrog in a jar of water.

Both the Alien and the BullFrog in size 14 are bream-catchers for me here in Texas. I only tie the Alien in black and the BullFrog (the only popper I use) in olive.

Enjoy and do keep us posted on your results!

Cheers,
