Times are tight for the holidays. My brother-in-law has become iterested in fly fishing and borrows a neighbors rod, and I am in charge of finding him a gift. Anyone try the Albright Yellowstone rods? They are their entry level rod and they fit in the Christmas budget this year (they are $11.80 ha!). Just didn’t want to waste any money on something that would turn him off from fly fishing,. Useable castable…is all.
Janus
I have not cast the Yellowstone but I have a 3wt 5 pce and have a 6wt 5 pce on order.
They are good value rods at the regular price and how can you possibly go wrong for $12.00?
The rod tube it comes in is worth more than that.
They don’t have the attachments of a Winston or Sage , but they don’t pretend to be other than what they are. If nothing more, they make a great back-up or travel rod that won’t break your heart if lost. Check out the reel prices too.

If for nothing else, you can always use it to poke bats outta your chimney.
Right I know the price is ridiculous but, it’s his first experience with fly fishing and just didn’t want to get him a dog rod that would make him think…well…fly fishing sucks.
Janus
Or…buy it, line it up, try it and if you don’t like it, sure as heck don’t give it as a gift. Every once in a while I find a really reasonably priced fly rod at a flea or yard sale. You never know.
Cheers,

I’ll do that check it out myself.
For that price I had to check it out. $19.38 includes the shipping. If I don’t like it there is that pesky cousin who is allways trying to con me out of fishing equipment (lol).

I ordered one of their topwater rods, a 9’ 2-pc 5wt as a backup rod for $20! After trying it out last week, it’s a nice rod for the money and plan to put it to use next season. Been trying to get my son-inlaw into fly fishing now so this would be a nice rod for him to use. I like the action on this rod.

Just got my Albright order today. I bought the 9’ 4 pc 6/7 wt rod. Casts good, a true medium wt in my opinion. A Bugati reel and extra spool for it. Not a bad reel at all. Also a Topwater 3/4 wt 2 pc 7’6" rod. It is a willow branch, but that is what I was hoping for. Using it in small creeks to catch panfish and miniature bass. The two Yellowstone I got were for the kids to start with, 8’ 2pc 5wts. I believe I like the action of the Yellowstone over the GP. The rods don’t have high quality materials or components but what would you think for the low, low price? All mentioned above and shipping was roughly $150. I mainly fish TFOs, TICR’s. Just to let you know the range of equiptment I use. Can’t go wrong in my opinion.
Go catch a fish,
Gary
Thanks I ordered him a 9’ 8wt yellowstone…he’s a big guy and said he likes to cast the “ocean rods” that his neighbor has which make me think it’s the upper wights. If anything it will get him started and he can take it from there on upgrading.
Janus
Excuse my stupid question, but where do you get them for that price?
Thanks
Roy
Janus, I think that 8wt will be just great. I was introduced to the Yellowstone rods not long after they came by a shop owner who sells a lot of high end stuff. He was very impressed by how the rods cast and fished. I was too. I didn’t buy any because I already had enough rods, but I directed a number of people to them. The components and cosmetics are not great, but were plenty good enough at the original $39 prices, and not a factor at the current blowout prices. They are a great rod to get started with, or to keep stashed in a car or truck, use as a loaner, or even for general usage.
I don’t know about the yellowstone rod but last year I got the meridian rod and the yellowstone reel. I was not too pleased with the reel as it is a rather cheap plastic reel.
However, the meridian rods are a very good buy at the current price. I was very pleased at how they cast. They are a medium-fast action.

Just checked the price of the 9ft 8wt Yellowstone at Albright…holy moly !
Cheers,

Thanks all it came to $16.50 total w/shipping.I was going to build him one but I couldn’t beat that price. I’ll just throw an old shakespeare 1094 and some factory second wf8 for him on it and he’ll be good to do. His neighbor takes out a driftboat on Burr Oak Lake here in Southern Ohio so a bigger rod would serve him better…
Janus
I got my order in yesterday, 1 yellowstone 8/9 wt and one GP 6/7, and I must say I am VERY impressed with the quality and feel of these rods. You cannot beat the price, nor the value!
Well, now ya dun it. I followed this thread til I found the Albright web site, went to it and had to buy something. I’m OCD and can’t help myself. Got my 10 year old grandson a 7’6’’ 4wt topwater outfit for Christmas. rod, reel and line. plus a pair of waders so he can splash along behind me, his big brother and bigger cousin in the Eastern Sierra streams. Thanks for the link. Jim:D
I received my Yellowstone rod today. It is a 9 ft 5 wt. The rod is nothing fancy with 2 stripper guides & the other ones larger than I am used to snake guides. The reel seat is plain Jane and the cork of better quality than I expected. The rod comes packaged in a plastic cylinder that is about worthless once you remove the rod from it - so you can figure on getting another tube & a sock if you want to. The wrappings are done as nice as those on my Loomis so no complaints there.
I usually find that I have to overweight a rod 1 weight to get it to cast the way I like. So I started with a WF 6 wt on a Pflueger 1495 reel. The rod felt butt end heavy and though it cast pretty well I was not satisfied so I switched to a 5 WF on a Pflueger1494 and let fly. The rod felt much more balanced and it was a snap to cast. The line zipped though those large eyes. In case you are curious the lines are those factory seconds from ForTackle ($9.50).
So in conclusion I think I got a pretty good deal from Albright and I am more than happy.
Tim
Thanks Janus for bringing this sale to our attention!!!
