Al Campbell Lessons on FAOL

I’ve been tying flies since the mid-to-late 70s. Had a few breaks over the years (the Marines will do that to you), but have always come back to it whenever my stocks ran low. Although I am mostly self taught, I’ve always taken the opportunity to learn from other tiers (through TU,at shows, conventions, or even streamside).

All that being said, I’ve started working my way through the Al Campbell Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced fly tying sections on this site, and while a lot of it offered nothing new to me, there are some real jewels of technique and knowledge there. I’ll look at his instructions for a pattern that I’ve been tying for years and pick up something new that will greatly simplify a problem or explain why it’s done a certain way.

My point in posting this is twofold:

  1. If you haven’t go through this series, take the time to do so - give yourself a couple of weeks - and I’m sure you’ll pick something up… even if you’ve been tying for years.

  2. Thank you, FAOL, for keeping this on the web. I’m relatively new to the site, but the more I dig around, the more I learn and want to keep coming back.

I will second that plus make sure to read all the tying tips section. Tons of stuff there and some really good tips!

Amen…I have been tying now for three years and I still frequent the tying series even for flies I tie on a regular basis. I would be lost without it.

We are truely honored with the amount of information available here on FAOL - for those who tie, there is also a complete section on tying Atlantic flies as well.
If you haven’t found it, it is here:

I love this sight and recomend it to others
it is a very well put together sight.
it dont intimadate and the way the directions are put forth it is very easy to follow .

I pretty much taught myself how to tie through the articles on this site and the help of a book and a DVD.

I solely taught myself how to tie from this site (and its members advice!) and one skip morris book
I find that a combo of Al and Skip makes for one excellent teacher!!!

Al’s materials on this site helped me a lot as I got started. In fact, I printed off some of the chapters that I really wanted to work on so that I could have them at my tying desk - computer is in a different room. Also lots of good stuff on the tips page. And whenever I have a question that I can’t come up with an answer for, I post it here. The folks that hang around here are great.
