AK Fly Fishers' Photo Contest

We just had the annual photo contest last night and my wife did pretty well… We bring in three judges with credentials and give some pretty fancy prizes…

In the “Spirit of fly fishing” category she took first with this: “All in a Row”

In “Only the Fish” she took first with this: “Quality Control”

And in the creative category (photoshop at will) she took first place with this: “Psycho Beadheads”

And she won the Judges’ Choice with this: “Old Man’s Memories” (I think she called me old!)

She did not win anything with this and was disappointed… but it is not like she did not Wow them…

thanks for looking!

The fly in Old man’s Memories is the AFF “official fly” the Alaska Mary Ann. I add the tag when doing fancy stuff, but the official version is just a cream or tan body with silver rib, a red hackle fiber tail, polar bear wing tied sparse, and JC eyes.

When the salmon smolts are finding their way to salt it is deadly on big trout.

The Carrie Stevens tribute uses an obvious Conranch new cree color hackle wing (over dyed orange) and a lady Amhearst rump for shoulder.

Mighty good photography!!!

Excellent work. She should be proud. Thanks for sharing.

Eric

Thanks for the kind words and Eric, I am sure she will be tickled…

Your wife is a very talented woman. Thanks for sharing her photos, I really enjoyed them.

Not only is Martha an excellent photographer, but is one of the best cooks I have ever found. She hunts, killed her Bear this past year. Ties a very mean fly. She runs a very tight ship (home) and this shows in my having the pleasure of staying in their home for a week this past summer. She and Hap
(Art) have raised a son (Riley) now 16 yo, that any man and woman would be proud to have as a son. Each member of this family are World class tiers and they are dedicated Fly fishers. I observed actions of this young man at stream side that showed how he has been raised. The release of a fish alone could not be faulted. A true Sportsman. By the way I did not count the fish Riley caught on our outing but am sure it was way over 200 Grayling in the 5 days we fished. Riley did the guiding for me and also the photography so that runs in the family also.
Thanks Art & Martha for including us in the Photo show & tell. Outstanding photography and the tyin ain’t bad either.

Thanks Peck family, all!

Thanks for the kind words! But, aw shucks (sticks toe in dirt and stirs a bit), tweren’t nuthin’!

Riley may be able to live up to that… he has been tying presentation stuff for the AFF tying contest … Looking for the right combination. He ties a mean fly!

You may remember the bush right next to the cook tent at the lake trout spot… That is where the line of rods were. Just a very short few steps from where you caught your first grayling.

Thanks again!

We’re honored to have the photos here - many thanks!

Art,
I thought when I first saw the photo that the bush looked way to familiar.
Brought back several nice memories. I had never fished and had rods stacked like the photo shows and as we did ours. Really handy to get out of bed and be able to grab up a rod all ready to go and fish while coffee was brewing.
That spot in Alaska will always be burned deeply into my retina for the rest of my life.
I suspect Riley will go on way farther as a tier than anyone suspects at this time. I could see something in the passion he has for tying and fly fishing.
Course what could we expect with a Mother and Father with the skills you two have?

Denny

I love all the photos but the “Old Man’s Memories” is awesome!
