Just found an old reel in a bag of my dad’s fishing stuff from many years ago. Description as follows: Pflueger SAL-TROUT NO. 1554
Went to Pflueger website and looked up info under “Antiques” Following info listed there: 1554 Sal-Trout 1935,52,56 fly
Question I had was if there is a way to tell which date it was manufactured, 1935, 1952 or 1956? The website only lists an e-mail address for repairs and the FAQ’s don’t help in this regard. Not an earth shattering quest, just curious. It still clicks loud enough to keep you awake, the black finish has seen plenty of use and the outer and inner rims on the handle side are slightly askew; but, still seems to work okay. Probably can straighten it up with a trusty needlenose plier “adjustment.” Plan on loading 'er up and catching a few more with it. Any info appreciated
Yes, check the Fiberglass forum. That very question was answered by forum member Bulldog not too long ago there. Just do a search. If I remember correctly there was an original release and a later Retro release. Bulldog explains which is which. I have a couple of those reels but I don’t think I’ve fished them yet. They are pretty cool.
It is unbelievable how much knowledge there is on vintage reels on the fiberglass and Clarks forums. The same is true regarding bamboo and fiberglass rods on those forums.
Thanks for the leads. Did a search and found the question previously answered in the forum mentioned. It appears that I have the preWWII reel with the Maltese Cross backplate as shown in the forum photos by Bulldog. In fact, the wear on mine makes it look like a twin. Going to line and fish it later this fall and then probably try and photo the first trout caught with it and use the photo as a background for a shadow box display for the reel. My dad got into fly fishing a short time before he passed away and I wasn’t aware of it at the time. Also have an old beat up bamboo rod of his (not in fishable condition now) that will be retired along with this reel. Appreciate your help.
