Advice for fishing Boise ID. area.

I will be driving to Boise ID. the last week of Aug. first week of Sept. to visit my sister that doesn’t fish. She is no help.
My history is in fished spring creeks with small flys. My rods are a 3 and a 5 weight.
I would like to try something different.
The advice i’m looking for is;

1.Who or what local shop should I try to contact when I get there?

2.Other than the boise river in town, where should I try fishing?

3.What flys and size should I tie to take with me?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Bunzo, You might want to contact Al and Gretchen at BT’s in Boise. 11965 W. Reutzel Drive, Boise 83709. 208-362-2663. albeatty2@aol.com. I have only bought stuff from them online and by phone.They are sponsors here. Probably let you know where, what and how. Really good folks. Jim

Dang, Jim, ya beat me to it. Al and Gretchen are down to earth folks and fine fly fishers and tiers, besides being great friends. If I were going to be in the Boise area, thats who I would contact for solid info.

Hello Bunzo, this link may be helpful: http://www.flyfisherman.com/rmwest/gtsilvercreek/index3.html

I’ve fly fished the Little Wood and you might like it. Not fished Silver Creek but you can hardly go wrong there for a challenge from what I saw. I stumbled on that section of LW referred to at the link as Taylor/Williams. In the ID regs it was called out as special regs if I remember correctly. There are lots of other places closer to Boise such as the Payettes and the upper reaches of the Boise forks…North comes to mind for feverishly feeding cutts one evening. Payette near Lowman should be of interest if any water left by August.

All mentioned will be fun to scout and I’m sure you’ll find some flyfishing. Hope this helps and you’ve got plenty of time to research that which I’ve mentioned…good luck with #18-14 dries in Adams parachute (always a good searching fly) or pale morning duns (PMD), Griffiths knat and up in the #8’s and 6’s, you could always try some hopper patterns and orange stimulators, a favorite of mine. North Fork Boise was a small stream by October last I was there but dry fly pattern towards evening din’t seem to matter. Good luck out Boise way and surrounding areas.

Just curious: is it mostly dift-boat fly fishing on these rivers, or do anglers park nearby and wade in?

Randy

All the water I’ve mentioned is wadable…and some of it you can stay on banks and gravel bars by Aug/Sept. Everyone that knows will agree, I’m thinking, that you are within’ reasonable reach of an awesome amount of good trout water. Another area I thought of is up Haley/Ketchum way. That’s the Big Wood River.
