Thanks, Jeff. Wow… I was thinking the water would be too low for my canoe but maybe I should bring it along, eh?
Diane,
there are lots of different size streams in the area but being a spring creek we always have plenty of water to canoe the north, south and main branch of the Ausable and The Manistee. The main branches are perfect drift boat water (or classic Ausable riverboats). also there what is called the trophy water below Mio that is big and deep. there are lots of big fish taken in that stretch. If you plan on spending a week you can fish a different kind of water every day. There is also Wakely lake that is a walk in nature area that is popular to float tube for pan fish (catch and release only).

In 1971 there was approx 600 a day floating the main stream. There are more per day now. It was very hazerdus to fish during the day as many were drunk. They have tried to control that I hear. ‘Rafting’ (lashing a few of them together by the sides) was a problem as it was hard to scramble out of the river in time when they came by. We have all been hit in the past years. We sometimes got lucky and heard them comeing.
The silver (canoe) hatch is from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm but there is plenty of small water also.
Small water? On the edges of the stream? Or do you mean just stay off the rivers at those times?
JC,
I am thinking like the North Branch above Lovells or the east branch, Big Creek, also the Manistee up by Deward. (smaller Streams)
So, stay off the main waters during those hours.
That or get a canoe. The rowdy bunch is mostly weekends. During the week it can be a great way to see and fish the river. I have taken my family w/small kids a few times and have never had a bad experience.
South Branch gets lots of canoe traffic also.

Yup, I did a photo story on Canoe Harbor (South Branch)in 1971. The pictures make you sick.

I saw ice picks, ground to two inches, on lanyards. When an angler was run into it was used to poke a hole in the canoe un-noticed, at the time. I never knew of one being use with success though.
