Add to the 'New Species' list. . .

Well, I got away from the office for lunch today and actually caught some fish. I was able to add to the list of ‘have caught’ fish that I have been enjoying growing while here in Nebraska. I caught two of them, the first one flopped off the hook before I got the phone out, but this one stayed on.

Enjoy, I did!!

Awesome!!!
I’ve seen some videos of fly-fishing for gar. Looks like a LOT of fun!! I’ve caught 'em on spinning gear, but not the fly rod yet.

What did you use for a fly?

It was a bugger type deal. Orange tail (with a little flash) and peacock ice chenille body. They also were hitting (and snipped off) Hard Hackle worms, Beaners Baitfish, and traditional buggers.

I had to keep them moving, but not fast enought to ‘get away.’ They would move up next to the fly, then take a sidways swipe at it, and if I got the hook set while it was in the mouth, I might get it into the fleshy part and keep them on. It was fun and challenging.

I hope to get back and keep one for a little bit of Gyotaku!

Congrats…always neat to get a new one on the fly!

Gesundheit!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Sashimi?

Ok so I’m and old guy and it took me a while to figure out that the fish wasn’t actually in the middle of a phone call when hooked. DUH! I forget that those new fangled phones have cameras in them. lol

Nice fish. I always like to add a new species to my list.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Way to go Don! It’s always exciting to add a new species to the list, & gars aren’t exactly common, so that makes it even neater!

You might want to tie up some of these flies and give them a try:

The primary food for gar are baitfish. They will go after anything that looks like a fish!

The frayed rope fly is the ticket!!!
