Hi,
Do any of you know what might have been up recently on the PM near(ish) Lake Michigan? My dad asked me, and my guess is a census, maybe steelhead… a couple of days ago, he saw big round floats on either side of the river, nets, people kneeling on the shore, lots of cars.

The steelhead have started, Kathy. I was in the area last weekend and the fishermen were out in droves. Fishing was pretty slow (although I understand it’s picking up), that’s likely the reason your dad saw so much activity.

Nets? It almost sounds like a Smelt run. I don’t know if they run over there but it tends to happen when water temps gets over 45. Nets are the best way to fish them.
Smelt run, good point, and I would imagine there are smelt.
Someone just e-mailed me asking if there could be Native American activity… ?
The big floats and net, lots of activity and cars. I guess I thought of a census since we’ve been taking about the electroshocking results on some local Maine streams.

Ya just HAD to mention smelt, didn’t ya?? I LOVE those babies deep fried & served with a real spicy cocktail sauce!! Problem is that very few restaurants/bars around here serve them, but when I find them, I scarf up 2 orders easily!
