I know this is hyper short notice, but I am thinking about beating the heat Saturday up on South Boulder Creek west of Rollinsville towards the Moffat Tunnel west of Golden, CO. Any of you fine folks want to come wet a line? Runoff has settled down and it should be pretty good.
I only wish I could. I will have to make the trip vicariously through you when you report back.
I would love to have you there, too. I know there are some local folks on the board not too far away. I seem to remember someone living pretty darn close to this spot but I could be mistaken.
Anyway, it will be a lot cooler up there than the 101* forecast for down here tomorrow. It’s easy to get to and there is a watering hole not too far away if it gets too warm. Add to that the fact that the Boss is doing alterations on a wedding dress and a couple of bridesmaids dresses tomorrow, and there is no way I want to be here at the house. Self preservation dictates a fishing trip.
The 11 hour drive (one way) does put a crimp in the day-trip idea. ![]()
I am, however, overdue in my obligation to visit relatives in Colorado Springs. I don’t know when we will make it out there next, but you never know, we may be able to work something out in the future.
If you make it to the Springs, we will have to hit Deckers or 11 Mile. Lots of public water and pretty good fishing. My next to the youngest granddaughter caught an 18" Rainbow up at 11 Mile for her first fish. Dang thing was almost as big as she was!
Sorry, but I have to pick up my bride at the airport. She’s been in Australia for 6 weeks and probably would not understand if I asked her to catch a bus home. ![]()
The way things have been with RTD lately, she would be safer in Afghanistan in a suicide bomber’s van than on a bus around here.
I knew it was short notice. ![]()
I took a son in law with me and I am very glad I did. I fell and was actually carried a short ways downstream. He fished me out. I had forgotten to take my camera and iPhone out of my pockets and they were drowned. The camera has come back to life, but the phone has not. I also gouged the heck out of my rod in the process.
I will not wade again without a wading staff. That was just flat scary. I am very glad Rory was with me to haul me up out of the creek.
So, we moved to South Boulder Creek below Gross Reservoir and found a nice hole. I thought son in law had been fly fishing before, but he had not. I spent most of my time teaching him a clinch knot and how to roll cast as we had no room at all for a back cast. He did pretty well. We talked about bugs and what to look for. I let him have the hole and he got into two, but got excited and missed the set. These were good sized fish, too. Water was crystal clear and you could see them very easily.
So lessons learned and over all, it was a good day with the son in law.
Wow Kevin,
Glad to hear you found someone to accompany you. Sounds like you were very lucky you did. Phones are way easier to replace than father in laws. Glad to hear everything turned out fine. You may have found a new fly fishing partner also. I bought a wading staff last year and was glad I did. I seem to be using it more than I thought I would. They work!
