Inexpensive small (or at least light weight) reels are not easy to find. I got a new Redington CT 2/3 on ebay a couple of months ago for $25. It is a very small machined clicker that balances my 1 wt nicely. The reel is discontinued so ebay is your best bet.
The Ryobi 255MG magnesium fly reel is perfect for a one weight - very light and a perfect size. They were an inexpensive reel when offered, but are now discontinued. The J. Austin Forbes magnesium reel is the same reel - JAF just re-labeled the Ryobi and changed the spool latch cover from plastic to metal. You will pay much more for the JAF though. Keep an eye on ebay. I have the J. Austin Forbes which was available for half price from Overstock.com until about two months ago. Great little reel, very light and well made.
I just got into the one weight game and fished this past weekend for the first time. I caught a 11 inch Rainbow and hooked a few more, what a blast. I bought a Sage SLT 1 wt. on ebay and decided to go with the Orvis Battenkill large arbor 1. I like the idea of the large arbor for not kinking the line and it also seemed to be one of the lightest reels I found. I also was lucky to get one from a local shop that was made in England on sale. The only thing that made me a bit nervous was when the big 19-20 inch rainbow went after my fly; I was thinking of the battle on that little rod. I guess I will have to wait to next time to experience that thrill.
I agree with djo. Another vote for the Redington CT 2/3. A veeerrry nice reel often available on ebay at a reasonable price. Another option for reels is the Traden Stuff website www.tradenstuff.com.
I don’t think you can beat the Elkhorn MA-0.5 in that weight class. It’s a great design and a well made reel. Like the Battenkill LA I and the Sage 3100 (also good in that weight class) it has a diameter large enough to keep your line from being wound in small coils so it turns into a corkscrew.
Here are my little reels
A LLBean made in England EQS, discontinued, inerds look like a Orvis B’Kill with offset drag.
A Pflueger Medalist 1492 (USA made) all that can be said about the Medalist has been said.
A Pflueger Supreme 1834, made off shore, machined, click pawl…
A Fin Nor fin-ite also machined, pretty reel.
There were so many wonderful reels posted in response to my initial querey. I finally made a choice based as much on cost as any other factor. Factually cost has a deep impact on my purchases at this point in my life. Otherwise I’d have two of each!
I purchased a Bass Pro Classic Ultralight reel. A lovely litttle reel. Now, if this danged high pressure ridge will move and let us cool off I can do some afternoon fishing.
Thanks again for inputting each of your thoughts on a reel. I can always count in lots of useful feedback here on FAOL.
