This is a really minimilist fly.
Just wondering as to what it’s supposed to imitate? Maybe something with a bad hair day?
nice Donald…sprase it is.
Donald,
Don’t you think there’s a bit too much fiber sticking out of the hare lug? Makes it look a bit fat. Just kidding, Donald. Great sparse fly. Did you use cellire on the wing tips?

Donald,
I have a hard time seeing this fly as a Tummel pattern. Heck, the body covers half the shank??? You sure it might not be a Clyde fly wanna-be??? 8)

Great fly Donald,
Gotta admit though…I could not tye it…Nope, no way, no how…How do you resist the temptation?..I’d HAVE to put at the very least a single sparse wrap of hackle on that before I could bring myself to finnishing off the head on a fly such as that…I am a soft hackle guy…through and through…and It just screams for hackle!!!
Hats off to ya for resisting it!!
Ron,
No there is no Cellire on the wing tip, that was only used on the later Clyde style flies.
This is based on the only illustration I have seen for Tummel Flies -
and this is the Woodcock & Harelug -
You’ll notice the difference in hook length with my fly, these hooks appear to be quite long compared to my,
which is a short shank. Therefore I concentrated on the wing and body size in relation to each other.
I dressed the Harelug in front of the wing as well as behind, as the original fly appears to have been dressed
on top of the gut to hook whipping.
I was originally going to include this fly in a swap, but decided against it, but then I have never been under
any delusions about my tying being of competition standard. That is why I have never seriously tried
tying, or should I say, dressing Traditional Atlantic Salmon Flies.
Donald,
Neat fly! How best do you fish it?
Donald,
Not to highjack your thread, but I noticed on the postings for the Clyde/Tummel swap that you were having problems witih your eye. Nothing serious I hope.

Hi Donald,
Nice fly. I agree with your view that the Tummel’s are tied on a longer shanked hook. They look to me to be 2x shank length, so if you’ve tied on a short shank that would greatly emphasize the difference. When I get my kit back, I think I’ll put together a few Tummel style flies. I’ve got a feeling they could do well in a few streams I know.

Hi Donald,
They do say less is better but that is minimalistic to the extreme
Cheers
PS I bet it catches fish
Hi,
While waiting for the insurance to decide on what they will cover of my fly tying kit, I’ve been limited to what materials I have. A friend from work has a few Rhode Island Red hens, so she gave me a few excellently coloured feathers. And, I found some olive dubbing in Vanessa’s kit. So, with some brown tying thread that I picked up the other day (can’t wait on insurance for everything after all), I figured I would tie up some “Cow Dung”. And, having seen Donald’s Tummel flies, thought I would do a Cow Dung “Tummel -style”, and here’s the result. I’m quite pleased, though I see on Donald’s site that some hackle could have been added and still been “true to the Tummel style”.

I’m keen to give this one a go next time I’m out. Fingers crossed there is something to report on the positive side!

Jeff,
Very good. I hope it will work out with the insurance payout.
Here is a Tummel style fly I tied up for a recent Clyde/Tummel Flies swap:

Hans
Or maybe a bad hare day?
Ed
A very nice fly Jeff, I hope you read the rest of the article on how they were fished and why they were tied this way. A lot of it of course is Lawries supposition.
Hans, a superb fly as usual, but I had not realised I was entering a competion, your fly certainly put mine in the shade and made me regret posting it, if that was the intention.
Hi Donald,
Yes, I’ve read through the section on your site about fishing the Tummel flies. I was thinking of them as a crystal clear water fly, but I see that the Tummel is peaty rather than clear. One of my favorite streams is “peaty” when it’s clear (usually muddy), so I’ll give these a try there. Also, I read how the idea was probably to get the fly to sink more easily. I think I’ve read everything on your site, and somethings multiple times! Must say, it’s a great trove of information.
- Jeff
Hi Hans,
Great fly! And, like Donald’s site, I’ve had yours bookmarked for ages (and have viewed it often as well). Looks like the insurance will probably cover everything, and my local fly shop can order just about everything in for me. Just waiting for the final word.
