a NOT attaboy for Orvis

Over 9 weeks ago I sent a rod in for a tip repair. At least they are responding to my follow up emails. :frowning:

Sorry to hear that. I had them repair two Bamboo rods and the both took six months or there abouts. I was very satisfied with their service.

Sage is currently taking longer…

If ORVIS keeps up that kind of service , they’ll be out of business in the next 100 years for sure.

Mark

PS: Do you honestly think ORVIS is in business to disappoint customers?? Other than wanting to post a blurb, do you REALLY think your comment was in ANY way productive or helpful ? Only ORVIS bashers will find fault in this GREAT company. AND, NO, I do not worship at their altar but I appreciate the business model.

Mark

At least it is winter and not that many people go out and fish.

(waiting to hear from all those who do fish during the winter)

That would be me. Fished THE December Hopper ( aka the FEB Hopper - FOTW back in August '09 ) twice this week in Northern Idaho for West Slope cutthroat. Both days the temps were right around 40*F with mostly cloudy skies and no breeze. The river was in fantastic shape - strong flows and crystal clear, and no ice.

Wednesday, in about three hours on two different stretches, THE December Hopper accounted for 4-5 refusals, 5-6 hits that didn’t hook up, and 15-18 in hand. Today, again in under three hours on four different stretches, it produced very similar results, with a few more hits that didn’t hook up and about the same number in hand.

Best early winter Hopper fishing I’ve had, for sure.

John

Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion of Orvis customer service.

Hmmm. Long time no hear. Good to see you posting again, John. Hope to continue to see your posts. Happy Holidays to you.

Mark, when I first sent the rod in, I was told it would be 4 to 6 weeks. It is what it is.

Orvis is a kind of lightning rod, I am a member of another forum and there was a thread on fluro tippet. I posted that I liked Orvis and I was surprised at the negative responses for the company in general. I can see how that kind of response can make the pro Orvis folks a little defensive.

Yes, I think it is helpful to know about warranty response time. I think Hap’s response about Sage was helpful, it must be a busy time of year.

Great to hear you are out and about, John. I was out Thursday, 39 degrees with a sustained wind due to the Noreaster that went thru. It made me think about the post “freezing your materials”

John,

There is no way to explain how thankful I was to see a post from you! I hope you continue to post and do post your new patterns that I know you are trying out. I fish the PSC just about every trip and it has been a fantastic fly pattern for me and others that I have shared it with. Have a wonderful Christmas!

John! How good to hear from you! Nice to know everything’s right with the world again.

So nice to see you well enough to post again, Warren.

herefishy,

Well I am not really what you would say, well enough. Just a note to keep you up to date: My wife had her left knee replaced yesterday, Friday, and all went well and they say I can bring her home tomorrow, Sunday. She has therapy on Monday.

As far as my health goes: I have an appointment with a Chemo doctor next week on Tuesday and another appointment with a Radiation doctor on Wednesday. They are going to give me treatments to shrink a tumor located in my rectum and hope to remove it maybe in February. Yes, I have cancer, but, hopefully, I can get it removed and be put back together soon. With my rotator cuff surgery in January, my wife’s knee replacement and now cancer, 2014 has not been a very good year. Hopefully, 2015 will start out with the cancer gone.

Thanks for the update, Warren. Hang in there, buddy. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Best of luck with the cancer diagnosis, Warren, we will be praying for you.

Orvis’ turn around time is quite variable, from my own personal experience . Had a bamboo rod in to get work on and got it back in less than 2 months .which is four months better than most. had a graphite rod in and it took much longer. go figure. have to say, I was very satisfied with the work done. You, unfortunately , may have hit them at a busy time or someone ticketed incorrectly.
Hope you have it resolved soon.
Best,
Steve

depends on what model and if they have to make a new piece. if they can not fix they will replace the rod, how can you complain about that. I worked for orvis in the 90’s and that is about parr for waiting if not longer, remember you are not the only repair they have from around the globe and they only have a few people who do the repairs.

A couple of years ago, I lost the little “V” spring in my 8/9 wt. DXR reel. I called Orvis, and with shipping, they wanted something like $12 for the stupid little thing… Well in speaking with the customer rep, he agreed that that was far to much for a 1/4" per side little metal “V”, so he comp.ed the spring.

Wonderful! Except that the spring that arrived was a “coil” spring… and therefore, useless…

Upon calling Orvis back, (another) rep. explained they don’t carry “v” springs… So the reel sits in a drawer…

Have you thought of making one? If you can find someone who has an original, it should not be too hard to find the spring steel to make one.

Ted

I’ve made a couple, but not with good “spring steel” and mine all “fail” when fishing… The spool then releases from the reel body… not a good thing…
