A L Walker Fly Reel

Hi everyone, I’m brand new to this site and this is my first post. Question: I’ve inherited a 3.25" diameter fly reel. The only marks on the reel are “Maker A.L. Walker N.Y.”. I’ve been trying to find out more information on the manufacturer and would also like to know the reel’s approximate value (the reel is in near-perfect condition). Thanks.

Googled a bit and found this. Hope it helps.

“An A.L. Walker #3, 3” diameter and EX sold for $1316." It comes from[url=http://oldfishingstuff.com/august04.htm:04f16]eBay Report for August 2004[/url:04f16]

Thanks for the info Taxon. Walker reels must be great collectibles to command that kind of price.

FG;
Welcome to the best site on the net!! You didn’t say where you’re from but you are now part of the FAOL Family no matter where!!

Thanks for the welcome, Jack.

I’m from New York Stste. I lived in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area until last year when I moved downstate. Am now about 80 miles north of New York City, close to the Catskills.

Have two fly rods - an Orvis 7’9" graphite rod and a Series “99” Orvis bamboo rod. The graphite rod is a 5-weight and the bamboo rod is a 7-weight. I e-mailed Orvis with the serial number for information on the bamboo rod and they said the rod would actually work better with a DT 6-weight line. The bamboo rod was also inherited and will be 40 years old soon - Orvis told me it was built in February 1966 and even gave me the names of the two gentlemen who built the rod. Does Orvis maintain good records or what???!!!

Walker Reels are very respected. Archie Walker was the supervisor of machining for the Otto Zwarg Reel Company and Zwarg was the supervisor of machining for the Edw vom Hofe Reel Co. What you have is the last tie to the original EVH reel from those that worked for either EVH or Zwarg. The price on the reel currently is in the 2K range if it’s in the shape you described, if it’s Left Hand Wind add a bit more but few are LHW. Regards…

Last year I sold a pair of Zwarg reels for roughly $2400.00 each. The Walkers are equally collectable and sought-after.

Enjoy!

October Woods & Mike_D: Thanks for the information regarding my reel. October, the reel IS left hand wind.

Wow! I have one myself in LHW and it’s worth around $2250 it isn’t MINT but EXC + so I’d have no qualms saying yours is closer to $2400. Enjoy… Should be a Model TR III
