A few months back.....

I posted a question about fishing with a 10-month-old in tow a few months ago. I got some good advice and ended up getting a Deuter backpack carrier for my little girl. We have been out a few times, I only fish from shore and only where I can easily walk to, no excess bending, climbing, etc. We have mostly been skunked or only caught Creek Chubs. However, today we caught this…

It’s a bit of a challenge landing a fish like this with a kiddo on one’s back, but it was fun, too. And she giggled the entire time we were playing the fish! Oh, she’s just over 1 year now.
All the best,

Dear WCC, one of the most memorable things I’ve ever witnessed was a dad with daughter on his shoulders wading the upper Yellowstone (Buffalo Ford). She was one happy little girl, especially when dad handed her the rod with a cutthroat on it. I’m guessing she was maybe
five or so, and knew how to hold on to the rod. He ended up landing it, but they shared the thrill. I hope she is still fishing with her dad and pray that your kiddo is still fishing with you a few years from now was well. Hopefully neither of you will ever forget the experiences.
God Bless!

LF,

I hope she is still fishing with me in the future, too. Today was really special. She first pulled the backpack across the foyer floor and then went over to where I keep my flyrod and fly tying stuff and pointed and squealed at the rod. I took that as meaning, “Let’s go fishing, Daddy!” So we saddled up and walked out back to the little trout stream in our back yard and wandered up to a hole that we had seen some fish in, but hadn’t tried out yet. There are at least two more good sized ones in that pool, including the one that stole my fly. But they’ll have to wait for later, the rain was threatening.

WCC, seems to me you have an up and coming fly fisherwoman there. Enjoy her while you can, all too soon she will be all grown up. I speak from experience on that fact. Enjoy your fishing trips together and have FUN, take care, John.

Hi WCCNovice,

I take my little one fishing sometimes. She’s 3.5 now, but really enjoys it (for short periods, attention is grabbed by other things quickly at this age). My wife and I will swap who fishes and who looks after her, and we pass her the rod when we hook up. She really enjoys that. Last time we went out she was convinced that because she had her rubber boots on that she could join daddy in the river though, so probably will just shore fish when she’s with me until she’s older. It’s a great experience to have her with me. Enjoy the moments while they last, and the memories forever.
