Went out to my favorite bluegill spot today to play around and try a few new flies. One that shocked me was the size 8 puglisi minnow on a Mustad circle hook tied one as a joke thursday night and now I am going to tie as many as I have hooks for.

Zac if you look close at that last pic you can just see the hook eye and a lil chart crystal chenille the rest is inside. The reason my gill flies are barbless.

cdpaul… I use Mustad C51circlehook size 8 and puglisi fibers. there are lots of videos on how to tie them just search “puglisi minnow video” it will show you better than I can tell you.

Good catching, Steve! I caught some crappies on the small EP baitfish, but no 'gills on them yet. Well done!

steveks, very nice gills there my friend. I live in Knob Noster Mo. about 75 miles east of you. I fish the State Park lakes nearby ( 3 miles). Fishing for gills is a real blast and haven’t even fished for trout. Retirement is going to afford me more quality gill time, take care, John.

I have tied many Puglisi using the Owner Mosquito hook in 8,6,4 and have caught many big brim and big crappie.It has for many years now my best brim,shellcraker and crappie fly.
Also,think about it,using the techniques you used to tie the puglisi,use these techniques to tie the Puglisi in the styl of a clouser-----this is a real killer in 10 and 8.I have these flies on

Lakes, ponds and strip pits. Most places where people fish for bass and other fish are good for gills. Just fish a little deeper and farther from shore to get the bigger fish to hit. I also like to use flies no smaller than #10 keeps some of the smaller fish off the hook. But my favorite palce to fish are the strip pits off my pontoon.

I have not used Congo hair but I am sure it will work—I started out using EP fibers but soon tried craft hair from W-M and also fake fur from W-M .I n fact the fly that was tied Puglisi method
but in the Clouser form (the brown and white fly) was in fact tied with “fake fur”.
