A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge ( Old Hwy 40) at Donner Summit, Truckee) on a Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge (see unbelievable photo below) and pulled itself to safety.

Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. (see photo below)
The rescue party will attempt to coax the bear out of its safety hole after securing a net under the bridge.
I remember this story. Like Betty said, it’s true. In another lifetime, we used to bicycle up and and down that road for training. Spectacular views and great workout!
I live about 30 miles downhill from that bridge and I can say “Yes, it really happened”.
There’s a really nice parking spot and view point right next to that bridge. You can look down and see Donner lake or look up and see Donner pass. The transcontinental railway passes right next to that spot and it still has wooden snow sheds over the tracks.
