A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge ( Old Hwy 40) at Donner Summit, Truckee) on a Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge (see unbelievable photo below) and pulled itself to safety.

Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. (see photo below)

The rescue party will attempt to coax the bear out of its safety hole after securing a net under the bridge.

They managed to get the bear tranquilized and the bear fell into the net.

The net got lowered down to ground safety.

The bear then woke up and walked out of the net.

Yep! September 18, 2007 Kewl story!!

I remember this story. Like Betty said, it’s true. In another lifetime, we used to bicycle up and and down that road for training. Spectacular views and great workout!

Where’s the photo?

I don’t think the pictures show up east of the Mississippi.

Here are the pictures for us East of the Mississippi. One fortunate bear.

Wow! When you said bridge I was thinking of some dinky little one. That’s major.

For some reason it is not showing up for me as well now. Thanks for the link mcsteff.

Now that there is a make you feel great story if there ever was one!

Well done rescuers , very well done indeed!

I saw that 2-3 years ago and was amazed. I’m still amazed. Great work by those folks in charge.

I live about 30 miles downhill from that bridge and I can say “Yes, it really happened”.

There’s a really nice parking spot and view point right next to that bridge. You can look down and see Donner lake or look up and see Donner pass. The transcontinental railway passes right next to that spot and it still has wooden snow sheds over the tracks.

There’s a lot of history in that area.
