First off I’ll disagree with the whole group on using 5min. epoxy… Hate the stuff and way back when I started out building rods ,had the stuff pull loose on seats and whatever.
I use 2 ton epoxy for everything and have never had anything come loose again. As for the tip top I normally use the glue ferrule stick JC referred to without any problems. I would in a pinch use the two ton epoxy on that if i had to. Just about any Exopy (save Gorilla glue) will loosen with heat. To loosen a seat, grip ,tip, I use Boiled hot water. Submerge the parts in a pot of boiled hot water and in a few minutes the parts will come apart with pulling. this will not effect the resin in the rod. Gorilla glue unlike epoxy ,is impervious to water and once any parts are glued with it…their GLUED! I only use gorilla glue on cork grips that I make (using cork rings) for superior strength.
What is your reasoning for wanting to use a 5 minute epoxy? I am of the opinion that you should use a product that is made for the task at hand; in this case, a product like U-40 Rod Bond. Best Regards…

Flexcoat 5-minute does NOT cause a problem when removing tip-tops … heat and remove. However, it does take a fully intentional act to enable the removal.
There is no danger of damaging the blank, during the heating, unless one is careless. The nice thing is that FC 5-minute doesn’t come off unintentionally like typical low temperature hot glue sticks do.
However, if hot glue is working for you … don’t change. As a professional builder, I try to make my rods “bulletproof” to the maximum degree of availability … FC 5-minute for the tops is just one of the many steps I take in doing so.

P.S. For those that MIGHT be thinking of using Rod Bond for tops … it isn’t the best idea. It has a stronger bond than FC 5-minute and is more difficult to remove. I recommend that Rod Bond be used underneath grips, reel seats and butts.
tampa jim, thanks. I have never used the 5min stuff and figured that it would burn a cane rod tip to heat it enough to get a tip-top off. I confess to liking the idea sometimes of doing things in an old fashioned way and the glue stick is really convenient to carry in a veast pocket etc.
Chris fromCanada, I have used Gorilla glue for many wood working and ski repairs. It’s an excellent adhesive but does have several drawbacks.
The glue expands as it cures, turning into a foam and increasing in volume. This is great for gap filling, but makes it VERY messy. It is extremly hard to control where the glues oozes out.
It will also stain your hands a dark purple, so wear gloves.
For these reasons it would not be my first choice for rod building, I prefer epoxy.
AYIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Elitist snot head? Gorillas? stick glue? heat guns? boiling water? broken rods?
OUCH? all this from one little question.? Oh well it’s probably partially my fault. The reasonong is simple.
I have 5 minute epoxy that is getting used about once a year. If I buy specific rod glue then it will be one more thing sitting on the shelf being used once a year…
Anyway since the waterproof part of Z-Poxy is questionable and I cannot get detailed info from their website I have decided to add one more item to the collection of things used once or once a year
.
I will be ordering some Flex Coat rod adhesive especially that it looks like I will need some arbors too.
Thanks everyone for your input.
Mikie, Mikie, Mikie! There’s a very simple solution to your cache of Flex Coat!! Build more rods!

If you have a local fly shop or club that puts on rod building classes or provides customers with loaner rod building equipment ( rod wrapping stands and driers ) or supplies for onsite rod building ( epoxies and wrap finish ) you could donate equipment and / or “leftovers” so they will get used.

That is a good idea Betty.
It’s too bad that unfortunately it does not fit in my budget… Oh well maybe i start building and selling custom rods…
