Might be tough to find a finished rod for that price.
I talked to the owner of Colton fly a couple of days ago and he is clearing out rods and reels. Colton is a direct to buyer outfit, so their prices arent doubled by the middleman. If you go to stripersonline you will see that people RAVE about colton, the fly reels are made for the salt, and have a drag that is made for tartpon and tuna! And even the 3 weight reels are made for salt and have the drag that is made for tuna. The reels being clearanced are barstock and made in Germany, and are being cleared out for $60-$80, you can google colton fly’s web site and give the owner a call, or look on ebay. If you can get in touch with the owner that would be the best, he can also tell you if he has any 3 weights on clearance.
Just checked ebay, looks like they only go down to 4 weight, retail about $200 cleared out for $80, here is info on them
Model Line Weight Length Pieces Weight Blank Price
SS4 4 8’-6" 4 3.1oz IM10 $199.00
SS5 5 9’-0" 4 4.1oz IM10 $205.00
SS6 6 9’-0" 4 4.3oz IM10 $215.00
Want to add twenty or thirty feet to your cast? Want to make those short distance casts quicker and with better accuracy? These powerful yet graceful fly rods are designed to handle everything from small streams to large rivers, and lakes. All of the rods in the slipstream series are fast action, and made from 54-million modulus proprietary graphite! This gives the angler the opportunity to load the rod quickly and make those short distance, delicate presentations, yet has more than enough reserve to hit those cross river hero casts with ease.
Each fly rod in the Slipstream series is fitted with the new Channel Lock reel seat from Pacific Bay to ensure a tight fit, (TiCh) titanium hard coated stripping guides, Oversized (TiCh) titanium hard coated snake guides to allow for better line control and less friction, and flor grade cork grips.
All Colton Fly Rods come with an extra tip section, five-section rod bag, and an embroidered travel tube!!
Cabela’s LST series is on sale right now. I’ve heard good things about them and wiggle tested them myself, but don’t own one yet nor have I cast one (this may change in the next week or so if I can make it up to their Hamburg PA store after work one evening). Just so happens their 9’ 3wt sale price is $105.
The Cabelas LST looks like a bargain.
A few years ago I built a 9’ 3wt from a Pac Bay IM6 blank. In those days they were made in USA by Batson I believe. I was not expecting much but it turned out to be just a dandy rod. If I’d have known how good it was I would have put better fittins on it and tried a bit harder on the build.
Its a true 3 wt with a soft tip and stiff butt, its able to throw quit a bit of line for a 3 wt yet lay down a fly without a ripple up close.
I’ve forgotten what I paid for everything but prolly less than $60.
Its one of a only a few rods I’ll never sell.
I’ll probably spend eternity in retailer purgatory for this. The LST’s that AnW refers to, are light in the hand, fairly fast, crisp and attractive in their own contemporary way.
I’ve used the 3 wt., 8 wt. and have a four piece 9’ - 9 wt. on the way. If the action fits you and your needs, at the sale price they’re pretty hard to ignore and they have a no hassle return policy.
Best, Dave
