Hello all,
Building a 6’6" 2wt using single foot guides have size 5 and 6’s for the running guides. The stripping guide that I had is an 8 I believe and it seems that it has a smaller ID than the size 6 running guide above it. I also have a size 10 stripping guide and it is wider not sure if it would look too big for the 2wt. Just checking to see what you all have used on any 2wt that you’ve built.
Thanks,
Janus
Have you put the guides on yet? Do the sizes look right to you?
On my 6’6" I used 2 size 0, 2 size 1, 2 size 2, and a size 8 stripper.
Betty no they look big I haven’t put them on I was going on suggested sizes from a guide calulator and a previous post here. Your sizes sound more or what I am looking for. These look big all around to me…ha! I might need to reorder a whole new set…always fun to pay 6$ for shipping on 3.50$ worth of product. But I’ll tape these on and have a look.

Just wondering if you two are talking about the same KIND of guides ??
Seems I read something here a while back that there are some “single foot” guides ( I think it was Fuji ) in size 6 that were the equivalent of something like a size 1 or 2 regular snake guide ( whether single or double foot ).
And if the size 8 stripping guide is a different style than the other guides you have, it could well be a larger size with a smaller i.d.
You might wait until someone can speak authoritatively on the subject before you pay any more S&H charges ??
John
Seems like it might have been Gemrod who was discussing this. He recently sent me a Fugi guide, which I just noticed is a size 6 and it is very small compared to a size 6 snake guide. You might want to send him a PM ??
a Size 6 single foot guide john is basicly about the size of a 0 snake guide. Single foot guides are measured in mm I believe. Actually a size 10 stripping guide is just about right. I show that for a 6’6" fly rod in a 2 weight it should be 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,10. spacing from the tip is 4 1/2, 9 3/8,14 3/4,20 9/16, 26 3/4,33 3/8, 40 1/2, and 48. This of course would have to be tested under load but in my experience probably won’t have to be moved. On a 10 stripping guide the inside of the ring would be 10 mm or so I am led to believe. Just my 2 cents
Right I think you all are correct. I used a guide calculator and got a 5,6 sizing for the running guides but I believe it was for ceramic inserted guides like the fuji. But, I am using light wire single foot guides and harleybob’s sizing seems like what I need. So I’m stuck with some big guides and have to reorder. This is my first build with single foots all the rest have been traditional snake guides, it confused me a bit. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

Above is what Batson reccomends for your rx6 blank, could be different ideas out there on guide sizes but 5-6’s “seem” to large to me.
I used the above sizes with an additional size 10 stripping guide on a 9’ 3 wt. and they seem appropriate and casted correctly. Hopefully you have a local Fly shop, they often carry guides behind the counter, you have to ask…save that shipping.
Hey Janus you can always sell them to someone or trade for something. Wish I had singlefoot guides I would just send them to ya but those I don’t keep around.
I just ordered some from Hook and Hackle…If anyone wants these pm me and I’ll ship them out to you for nothing… think I have 5 size(5) and 2 size(6)…installed the seat, cork and tip tonight just waiting on the guides…This is a definite spring/summer rod for around here so it’s gonna be alot of me wiggling my rod in the basement(insert joke here) until winter ends. But the blank seems like it’s going to be a blast to fish with.

You have a pm for the guides
chris
All yours.
Guides for a 6’-6" 2wt.
All Fuji Single Foot Alconites
stripper size 8…next size 7…next size 6’s ALL THE REST OF THE WAY…INCLUDING THE TIP.
Wanna get a little experimental…no 7’s or 8’s. JUST ALL 6’S. After all it’s is a short small rod. Don’t think you are going for long distance here.
Went light wire single foot…five 1’s then two 2’s and a size 8 stripper.
Batson recommends guides that are much too large for my taste for the blank.
