I did this thing the first year around and I got the impression that either my gift was no liked ( a gift certificate from hook and hackle) I was not liked or both. I skipped it last year due to those reasons. This year I am skipping it again because I am financially wiped out. Christmas for the family comes first along with all of the medical bills.
I would suggest that you send the gifts anonymously. After all it should not matter from whom it comes, it is a gift from the heart.
