2012 Central Iowa Fly Fishing Reports

I landed just the one rainbow, so you did a lot better than I did!

Yesterday during lunch, I tried to fly-fish a creek for suckers. I have no idea what kind of ā€œspawning runā€ of suckers this creek gets, but I did catch some out of this creek years ago, before I started fly-fishing. So…I was hopeful. As it turns out, I didn’t see a single fish or get a detectable bite. Bummer.

Interesting spot, though…

Not so sure about that, Dave. I wandered around the Missouri for something like five hours watching the bugs, trying to get a feel for the system, which is quite different than my normal ā€œhabitatā€, and watched fishies rising close by while I made cast after cast with fly after fly a good part of the time. :frowning:

Had some time to kill while in West Des Moines last night, so I fly-fished at Blue Heron Lake. I spent a fair amount of time untangling my line from the abundant sticks along the shoreline at my feet, and from the trees behind me. Pain in the…tuckus!

I ended up catching at least 8 skinny Bluegills, 2 skinny Crappies, and a ā€œfly-rod firstā€ for me…a Yellow Bass.

Dave,

Ever consider a stripping/shooting basket? I made one from a Rubbermaid dishpan with 2 slots cut for a wading belt (I’ve used bungee cord too). Great for fishing in situations like yours; also does a great job keeping the line from tangling pilings & bulkheads when I’m striper fishing. Congrats on the yellow bass.

Regards,
Scott

That would have worked great! Yes, I’ve considered a stripping basket. Haven’t pulled the trigger on one yet.
Most of the places I fish, I don’t need one…but it sure would have been helpful that night.

Cloudy and cool day today (Saturday). Chased some bass, and caught some bluegills. Blogged the report here:

Caught a ginormous 8.5" Green Sunfish while fly-fishing during lunch today!

Also caught some decent bluegills…this one wasn’t the biggest, but it had a REALLY bright, deep orange breast:

Also saw some big bullfrogs, their tadpoles, a muskrat, and this Painted Turtle (its rooting around underwater):

Dave,

Nice fish. I need to take a few hours off from our bathroom re-modeling and hit the local pond.

Scott

Fly-fished during my lunch hour today. WARM…mid-80’s during the noon-hour! The report is here:

Fly-fished another ā€œnew-to-meā€ public pond during lunch today.

Here’s the report:
http://fishndave.blogspot.com/2012/05/another-new-pond-lunchtime-fly-fishing.html

Its hard to get the right perspective from the picture…I measured the pond from Google Earth, and it is appromately 700’ at its longest point, and 370’ across at its widest point.

Dave,

Good luck on the golden bonefish.

Regards,
Scott

I’ve caught carp on flies. The ones in these ponds are a different challenge from the ones I’ve caught from the reservoirs and rivers around here…and these are also much smaller than most of what I’ve caught before. Nevertheless, the challenge will be fun…I hope I’m able to ā€œwinā€ a few. I’ve never caught Buffalo on flies yet…so that would be pretty cool if I can get these to strike. They appeared to be just slowly swimming beneath the surface sucking in plankton. Anybody got a good plankton pattern? ;o) j/k

Fly-fished during lunch today. Caught 4 species, but not either of the 2 species I was HOPING for.

Dave,

Sorry no carp or buffalo, but that’s a pretty crappie and the bass & sunnies were respectable, too. We’ve got some huge grass carp in our neighborhood ponds; never have caught one but still hope to some day. I’ve read that some folks pre-game spots by chumming with grass clippings, then cast pieces of plastic Easter basket grass lashed to hooks; they say this with straight faces.

Scott

Fly-fished last night, trying James Smith’s version of a bass Gurgler. Worked GREAT!

Resorted to ā€œdappingā€ to save the day yesterday. Also got some help from some fly-fishing friends at the end of yesterday’s evening fishing outing.

Caught some NICE Crappies during lunch today, including a BEAST 14.5" fish.

Tried the bass-sized Gurgler again. I’m impressed! First two fish of the evening were a 17" bass, followed by a 19-incher!
