2011 Playing Hooky Thread

Ben, welcome back. Glad to see you on the water and posting.

Kelly - oh, yeah, awesome pics of pigs, well played, sir!

Thanks Kelly. Good to see you around here. Man I hope you are going to be able to get out on the water real soon.

Here are a couple pics from last Friday’s outing. Big Heads up and crushing hoppers makes for a very enjoyable morning.

Beasts! The difference in spot patterns is interesting too.

Let’s try something a little different today. Like I said I got a new camera the other day and this Olympus supposedly takes decent video. I also received a gorrilla pod back in June for Fathers Day. This morning I thought I would give them both a try and see if I could set up the camera on some visibly rising fish, and get the take on camera. Well lets just say it is not as easy as it sounds. At the very start of the video you will see the wake of a large fish go from the left side of the screen across. That’s what happened as I made my first attempt at this. So I put the camera away, and promptly caught a nice fish just upstream. I then decided it was time to work another fish that I spied sipping in behind a bank side rock. Well that is where the next frame in the video pics up. I made several casts into that hole, but no luck. I believe the whole set up and wading into position spooked that fish too. But then as you will see I spied a barely visible rise just up in front of that rock and so I figured I would leave the camera running, wade up a couple feet and drop the fly in that pocket. Sure enough, the first cast resulted in a nice eat, captured, by pure luck on the camera. So here is the resulting footage of this mornings outing, and as you will see I have some learning to do just what is in frame as you don’t get a real good shot of the fish after it’s in the net. I seemed to think the lens pointed higher than it did. Enjoy.

That’s pretty cool! How did you do the “slow-motion recap” at the end?

Thanks Dave.

I just used Windows Movie Maker for this one. It’s pretty easy, and better yet, it’s free. I just copied that section of footage and pasted it in again at the end, and added slow motion to that clip. It was really pretty simple in the program once I gave it a shot. It was kind of fun to do something a little different. Hope to get a few more videos in the future.

Wow KD that was awsome. Nicely done video for the first time. Great action shot of the take. Thanks for the neat video. Keep up the good work.

Awesome Ben. That brings back some great memories from last year.

Thank you for that.

Rich

Ben, you ROCK! Its bad enough I have to see those pics of all the pigs you’re catching, but now I’ve got to (er, uh, I mean “get” to) watch you do it on video. You’re killin’ me Smalls!

Kidding aside, that is great stuff, brother, keep it coming, and thanks for sharing.

Kelly.

Thanks guys.

Sorry to torture you this way Kelly.

Oh and Rich, are you making a return trip up here this year?

Here’s a fish from this morning:

As Charlie Brown would say - “Aaaaaaaugh!” Doc said three more weeks on crutches as of yesterday, so I’m struggling a bit seeing all this fish activity. I’m glad for all of you getting out and catching, but its sheer torture…

Kelly.

I’m trying to make it back the first week of October this year Ben. I’ll keep you posted when we get closer.

Rich

This morning started a bit slow on the river, but things picked up in a hurry and I was able to stick 3 fish that each went 21 inches.

Fish number one was long and lean

I liked how this pic turned out. It’s a little different perspective.

Then I proceeded to head across the river and catch this guy in about 5 inches of water. Skinny lie, big fat fish. It’s always fun to find a big fish in these interesting spots.

All along the bank there are these huge spiders in their webs. I am guessing they get this big by eating the same grasshoppers that the fish are gobbling up right now.

Pardon my lack of video skills. Still learning but here is a little video of a typical morning on the river lately:

Tell no one about that spot…except me. ;o)
That was really cool! Great video, Ben!

Your video reminded me of what my old friend’s uncle told him “If you got bugs on the windshielf, the fish are biting.” Looks like it hold true out west just like it does in Mississippi.

What was the fly pattern you were using?

I can’t see anything ???

Rich, I am not sure why it wont show up for you, but here is the direct link so you can watch in YouTube.

Dave, Thanks. PM me if you are ever find yourself in the Boise Idaho area.

UncleJesse, Yep I felt the buggy windshield was part of the story here. These fish all took hoppers. They were feeding on a variety of bugs. I saw Ants, Trico’s, PMD Spinners, spent caddis, and many many midges all on the water, but for video purposes I figured a big hopper would show up a little better, and the fish certainly didn’t mind.

Dude, clean that windshield! I was sure we were going off the road early on

That was awesome, Ben!!! Thanks for sharing. What camera are you using as well as editing software?

Kelly.

Very nicely done! I don’t think your video skills are that shabby!
