Fly tying has many beginnings. Some start tying flies to ‘save money’ - which
hardly ever proves to be the case. Others begin with an interest in tying
flies which are more adapted to their locale. Once hooked, proficiency increases
and the types of flies change from very simple to involved ‘matching the hatch’
creations. And beyond. Who among us has not tied their ‘special’ fly? Or experimented
and created something which they knew would be exceptional on their waters.
It may not have worked, what matters is the fun of
doing it.
That is what How To Dress Salmon Flies is
about. Ronn Lucas, Sr. and friends will take us on a journey to learn new
methods, tricks and techniques to create these beautiful flies. You may fish
some, or tie some for your own amazement and joy. All sorts of Salmon Flies
will appear in this section, Hairwing Flies, Strip Wing Flies, Spey and Dee
Flies, Cheap Full Dressed Atlantics, Dries, Streamers, Married Wing Full Dressed
Flies, Full Feather Wing Flies - and Free Style Flies of all sorts. This is
not a stodgy treatise, it also is not strictly “traditional.” Come
and have fun.
It’s time to announce the entries to the 2010 U. S. Open Fly Tying Contest. We received some fantastic flies again this year.
The Full set of Rules for
2010 can be found here.
This year we are doing something a little different. The contest is being sponsored by FeathersMc.com, FlyAanglersOnLine.com and Ronnlucassr.com. It is our collective belief that the USA deserves to have a high profile Atlantic Salmon tying contest and with promoting on our three websites, this will happen. The contest, as usual will be open to any tyer regardless of where he/she lives.
- Wet fly. This category has hair wings, Speys and Dees, other sub-surface flies.
- Compulsory Classic Fully Dressed pattern. This year the pattern is The Beresford’s Fancy.
- Freestyle Fully Dressed. This category allows the Tyer to reach deep within his/her creativity. The entries must resemble fully dressed flies in their construction but design is up to the Tyer.
The number of entries per Tyer is limited to three. This means that each tyer can enter one fly in each category. No more than three flies in total.
