2006 Colorado Fly Fishing & Liver Abuse Festival

DanBob told me he made the instrument himself. It has a really beautiful sound.

He was using an interesting technique where the banjo was used more like a lead guitar to add licks under and over the guitar strumming. He’s a talented musician!

I have heard of ‘5 straing’ banjers being called an ‘axe.’ Often thought it an excellent choice. It seems now that I will be subjected to a whole CD full of the ‘clutch & claw’ emanations from at least one along with some other fellers jernin’ in. Cain’t hardly wait…
That I used to play a ‘real’ banjo has absolutely nothing to do with this post!

Oh, you got the kiddie’s model with the 4 strings, huh?

I didn’t get mine until I was in my late 40’s, so I got the adult 5-string model.

I don’t know if a banjo is supposed to have 4 strings or 5. I also don’t know the proper way to play it (I personally can’t carry a tune in a bucket).
But I can tell you that ol’ Dan was hammerin’ out some mighty fine music on that rig regardless of the rig or how he did it!
I’m looking forward to hearing the whole band in the near future.

Well, ‘Ol Joe,’ 'the one-man-band’played a real one, four strings. Various reasons have been brought up for the addition of a ‘drone straing,’ none of them credable or interesting. There has been ‘tension’ between real banjo artists, and them what claws at a ‘5 strainger’ for generations. Discussions are rarely fatal. Kidnaping (the axe, not the axer)is rather popular but usually fails due to lack of the ready ability of most to procure and deliver six large pigs. Several have attempted to ad yet another and sparking it up. Still will not come up to the harmonious strains of a ‘lektrik geetar.’ So, the exist to this day. I now find that we at the Idaho FI are being threatened by danbob actually showing up. Great, that will give us a half-blind indian with a drum, a man known only as “Z” who is learning to whang on a geetar, a kazoo, a jews harp and who know who/what else. I know of a ‘Dane’ who has a tenor guitar been tuned down to a baratone Uke. Not sure where the chord book went tho. Actually a hermoniker or three can be had as well.

Ya fergot the washtub bass, it’ll be there in Idaho too!
Happy plunkin’ fer sure.
DANBOB

Wow! Could be interesting camping next to you guys. The banjo music did scare the people camped down from us (something about deliverence  )

What we needs is a “scrubbin’ board” for the rhythm section and danbobs laundry. Nothing like the skritchin noise they make. As for a “wash-tub” base, jest nuthin’ else needs be sayid. Everbody gots at least one of them thaings.

When I was allot younger, I had an old Slingerland Tenor banjo. I gave it to a Nun who was one of my sons teacher. She really loved to play that thing…more talent than I had. DShock…you want thunderstorms, come here to S.E. Michigan. July is the murder month. I lost a horse a couple of years ago to lightning…I have tremendous respect for dark skies. Lightning cost me five grand so far for a new well. Insurance doesn’t cover everything.
