Anyone a member of the 12-12 club?
12inch or larger trout caught on 12X tippet?
Anyone a member of the 12-12 club?
12inch or larger trout caught on 12X tippet?
Who makes 12x tippet material and what is the breaking strength?
Does a 12" trout on a size 32 fly and 10x tippet count?
Deezel
It’s about 1lb test.
size 32? wow!
Deezel;
“Varivus” is about the only ones putting out 12X tippet material… that I’ve run across so far, anyway.
It’s .0026 tip diameter, with a 1.01# breaking strength. Although, I’ve seen various ads for Varivus tippet and it seems EACH shop, claims a slightly different tip diameter, and/or, breaking point. Varivus says it’s .0026 and 1.01#, but I’ve seen it heralded at .0032 and clear up to 1.06# breaking point?!
It’s also pretty “stretchy”, when it gets that thin too, so when you go after Steelhead and Marlin with it, and using those #32 Mustads, mated up with an 7’ 6" 3wt,…make sure you use a loooong tippet, to compensate!
(I don’t SUPOOOOOSE, you’re all fired up to let loose of some of those impossible to find, #32s by any chance…really cheap?? That is, if they’re the Mustad bronze, I have enough of the gold ones. Okay, okay, sorry!! I HAD to ask!)
Paul
Considering that legitimate tippet material TYPICALLY goes down in size by .001 as you go down in size and 8X is SUPPOSED to be .003; that would make 12X -.002 in diameter.
I am waiting for the size 52 hook to come out so I can tie it to that 12X that is -.002.
Wonder what I’ll catch???
Maybe a trout that is -12" long?
Paul,
I was actually talking about Tiemco 32s. They are about the same size as the Mustad 28 but with a larger gape.
As far as the Mustad 32’s, I had some but haven’t been able to find them. One of these days they may pop up, I hope. I never tried to tie a fly on one of these hooks. You’ll have to speak with Hans about that feat.

Maybe I will buy some and join the club this winter.

Mountain River Fly Shop in Cotter, AR does this.
Steve Dally might be along later to give the real details.
I was in there this fall and picked up a spool of 12x. (Varivas)
I will try this on the White River, of course…but I am definately going to practice up on some of the small streams in Missouri first! I could see losing a lot of flies to the bigger trout in Arkansas!
All of this is in fun, of course. I don’t consider any of this serious competition. Maybe more as a motivation to explore your angling skills.

 Well lets see (doubtful if I could), normal box of hooks, 100 count, size 32, 1000 count?
I can’t see a 22, let alone something that small!! Do they include a 10x Magnifying glass with them?
how do you people even tie that small? size 32??? i cant even tie a hares ear on a size 18 plain shank. its just to dang small. if you guys are actually tying on 32s, kudos to you. i dont think ill ever be able to tie THAT small. i dont even know how a fish would see that…
Last I heard was that tippet “X” size is material diameter in thousands subtracted from 11. Therefore an 11X tippet is thin air. What’s the change in measuring standards to label tippet as 11X and 12X?
LouT,
The new tippet standard is called “hype”. Much more genteel than BS.
Bill
I dunno…maybe the law of diminishing returns…

aka The putting Unneeded stress on the Fish club?
MikeL,
I was thinking the same thing.
I’ve done the 24/24 thing on the San Juan, but the tippet was 5x.
Use of such a small tippet is never neccessary. Back when 5x broke at 2 pounds, we sometimes had to go to thinner stuff so that spooky trout couldn’t see the tippet. Technology has gotten us past that.
With the advent of the newer nylon polymers and the flourocarbons, what used to break at around 2 pounds now goes better than four. 6X Flourocarbon is just under four pounds, and the whole purpose of it is to have a strong connection to the fly that the fish CAN’T SEE. Once we get to that point, what’s the purpose of lighter tippet?
It’s just a stunt. While I’m not neccessarily against that, we do fish for fun mostly, it’s up to each of us to decide how ridiculous we want to get about it. 12X? I’m not so sure.
Buddy
I’ve never seen a need to go beyond 7X.
Heck, I have enough trouble seeing 7X and size 20 flies as it is. I can’t even imagine trying to tie on anything thinner. How do you see it to tie a knot?
Jeff
That’s simple, Jeff…you need a special pair of these “Insect Glasses”, to tie on 12X!
Uh…the idea is the challenge, not the need.
Bunch a Bah Humbugs.
TO tell you the truth I have never even tried it. Just thought it sounded like a challenge.
BBW,
I understand the challenge part of this.
I did the ‘2pound test’ (the 2 pound ‘rated’ mono we had breaks at around 3 pounds ‘actual’ pull, and it still requires a loop knot to be that strong) thing this last summer with a spinning rod, just to see if I could do it. Did land a 16 inch Rainbow for the pot. Guy with me got a 4 pound Pike. Lots of fun, once.
I’m just not sure about 12x tippet.
I’m not sure I could see it.
I’m not sure I could knot it.
I’m not sure I could set a hook into a fish with it.
I’m not sure I could fight a fish with it, especially in moving water.
AND, I’m not sure that I would be able to release a fish I caught on it and have the fish survive.
All the others are fine and worth the effort if someone wants to overcome them. The last one is what will probably keep me from trying it.
If you want, go for it and let us know how it went.
Now, if some manufacturer could make 12X that broke at 4 pounds, I’d be there in a heartbeat…
Buddy
