Kansas Bluegill Fish-In 2009

By Greg Hilerman (ol' blue)

We're putting together an informal Fish-In at the mined land wildlife area in SE Kansas.

I'm planning on rough camping, and am expecting most of the people involved to do the same, although accommodations are available in many of the surrounding small communities. The exact camping location will be determined closer to the event, and might change since all sites are unimproved, and are available to the first person there. Right now, I'm hoping to camp in somewhere in units 21-24.

The dates we are going down for are May 17-19, but some may decide to arrive early or stay later. The closest town is West Mineral, KS.

The area is approximately 15000 acres with 1500 acres of water distributed to over 1000 lakes of various sizes. Rough camping is allowed anywhere but the refuges, and there is an RV spot by Big Brutus for those preferring to use a camper. Fishing boats, canoes, and float tubes are allowed, but no other recreational craft are allowed on site. In addition to the bluegill we are after, there are catfish, bass, crappie, and even some trout in one lake. If you decide to chase the trout, a state trout stamp is required. And of course, all Kansas fishing laws apply.

The area is largely heavy brush, so a boat or tube is recommended. Also bring bug spray. You don't want ticks or chiggers if you can avoid it.

The mined land info is best accessed from here: https://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/KDWP-Info/Locations/Wildlife-Areas/Region-5/Mined-Land

I've also attached a picture of Big Brutus. BB is the second largest electric shovel. It is 16 stories tall with a boom of 150 feet and weighs 11 million pounds. It also is responsible for the lakes that we are going to be fishing out of and is adjacent to the https://www.bigbrutus.org/index.html area.

There won't be a lot of formal activities, just a group camp area to hang out in the mornings and evenings, an open coffee pot, hopefully a fish fry, and some guys to compare notes with. It isn't unusual to have trouble finding the fish until you find the right lake, then you can't keep them off after that. But with over 1000 to choose from, you should be able to find a cooperative fish somewhere.

I guess you can call me the organizer. Let me know if I need to do anything else, or if I can get you any additional info.

This should be a fun time with a great bunch of folks. If you plan on attending, drop the LadyFisher an email and she'll put you on the KBFI09 Going List! ~ Greg Hileman (ol' blue) .
