Every one in a while someone comes up with a real winner! This
is one of those times. If you have any interest in fly fishing saltwater
anywhere from Maine to Texas - even if you are an old pro - there
are places, flies and methods you may not know. On the other hand,
if you're just getting started fishing saltwater, you must have this book.
The idea is brilliant - get the best of the local guides to write a section about
his local fishery. Included in each section is a regional map, charts with
both the bait, the most common fish and the specific times they are there,
a list of local guides and fly shops. It's absolutely great.
But there's more! Each of the guides also contributes his favorite(s) flies.
There are flies for the Northeast, Northeast Favorites for Stripers and
Bluefish, Favorites for the Atlantic States, Florida Favorites, Gulf States
Favorites, and Favorite Clousers. Almost all the flies have both the
recipe and instructions. Really very well done.
Quoting from the Foreword by Lou Tabory, "The more-skilled anglers
know how to read the water and find the conditions that offer hot fishing
but, even then, learning a new spot takes some work. Having a
reference guide to consult gives even the experienced fly-fisher some insight
into the fishery. I tell my students 'Learn several spots well and then
keep learning other places so you can broaden your knowledge.' When fishing
new waters it helps to have confidence so you can be prepared. It is
important to have some background when you travel, such as knowing the
type of forage and game fish you can expect to find at different times of the
year. And it is very helpful to know what flies to bring and their sizes,
what tackle and line types work best, and what is the best time of year to
plan a fishing trip. There is important information contained in this book
that will help anglers enjoy fishing many popular areas from Maine to Texas."
If you think you already know it all - forget it! There is just too much
for anyone person to know it. Do yourself a favor, get it!~ DLB
