Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

From Field to Fly
By Scott H. Seymour

From Field To Fly
If you really like catching fish on flies you have tied, try this; prepare the materials yourself! Perfect for those who have been asking the "how to" questions on bird skins on the Bulletin Board.

For the most part, it can be done and From Field To Fly explains in vivid color and clear text how to process skins and hides for your own tying use.

Skinning method Scott Seymour covers the methods for preparing; birds, upland game, waterfowl, small game, deer and large game. He shows you the tools and techniques necessary for doing the job completely and correctly. Identification of the various birds and the important feathers for fly tying is well illustrated.

Breadcrust Nymph He also includes great color pictures of the flies you can tie from these materials, including the recipes. Neat idea. The Breadcrust Nymph, tied from stripped grouse tail feather, rabbit dubbing and ruffed grouse body hackle is shown here.

So go ahead and catch your game and process it yourself, landing that next fish will be that much more rewarding. You don't have to be a hunter to take advantage of this book. One doesn't have to look far (especially in fly-fishing circles) to find a hunter who is willing to part with fur or feathers which are going to be put to good use. The author does cover 'road kill' too.

Grouse skin

Over-all, an excellent, well thought-out book. ~ JB
