Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

Extreme Flyfishing

Extreme Flyfishing is the big little book in the plain brown wrapper. Author, R.L. "Bob" Nunley is a well-known cane rod maker, but this is not a book about making cane rods. True, it is about fishing them which should make it of special interest to those who love and fish cane rods. More than that it is a delightful book about the attitude of one passionate fly fisher.

There are stories which will make you laugh out loud, a giggle or four, an audible "oh brother!" and a quiet sadness for the loss of a loved one. You will find included some hunting trip adventures, one in particular will raise the hair on your forearm. But mostly, Bob writes about what he loves, fishing cane rods. Like most of us, he occasionally wades too deep and finds himself in situations which can only be laughed at after the fact. Each has its place in forming the 'who' of Bob.

Part of that 'who' is a fine writer. Bob has a gift of sharing his place in time with those who wish to, for a time, remove themselves to another realm. The writing is simple, direct, with just enough description to set the stage. It's honest writing, not contrived.

You can read an excerpt previously published in our With Bamboo Section, Final Cast.

Extreme Flyfishing is self published, and my only picky about the book is the lack of editing and few typos - but understandable on a first book. And to be honest, I've seen as many typos from major publishing companies.

Highly recommended, and at the price of today's books, cheap! Get it.
