Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

A Passion for Steelhead
By Dec Hogan

Reviewed by Ron Eagle Elk

Okay, it's December or January and there is a light snow falling. You're sitting on a waterworn cedar log, a small warming fire blazing on the gravel bar to chase the chill from fingers and ears, the rush of an ice cold river along the gravel makes background music. Sitting across the fire from you is a your fishing guide, who happens to be world class steelheader, Dec Hogan, and he's giving up all he knows to help you catch the elusive steelhead. Sound like the trip of a life time? A trip to spend the kid's inheritance on? Well, boys and girls, I just had that trip and it only cost me $59.95. Okay, so maybe we weren't sitting on a gravel bar, but it felt like it. I spent a few days reading A Passion For Steelhead, by Dec Hogan. Passion would be a good word to describe the way Hogan writes about steelheading and the fish he knows so well.

book cover

The book is 8 1/2" x 11", 319 pages are crammed with good information on steelhead, steelhead flies, reading steelhead water, casting to steelhead, and how steelhead attack your fly. Not only is it filled with technical information about steelheading, it is a good read! There is no dry drivel thought up by a scientist, this is the passionate talk of a fishing guide truly enamored with his prey and their pursuit. The many eye-catching color photos and black and white sketches only add to the clearly written word.

If you're a steelheader already, only dreamed about casting to those chrome torpedoes, or are gearing up to tackle the waters for the first time, this is the book for you (and me). Primarily written for the two handed caster, the information in this book relates to all steelheaders on the fly.

Though it would make a great coffee table book, my copy is going to be hidden away from view. One of my fishing buddies may see it and want to borrow it, and I may not get it back. Ron Eagle Elk ~ REE
