Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

Steelhead Flies
By John Shewey

Book cover

John Shewey has put together a fine book on steelhead flies. Some folks might say that Steelhead flies represent the highest echelon of artistic fly-dressing. It is probably true that they enjoy a rich tradition as both a functionally designed lure for tempting the much-revered steelhead, but also as a creative expression of the aesthetic appeal of fly angling.

Author John Shewey John Shewey, who is also the author of Spey Flies & Dee Flies, has produced another well-written and rather well researched book, rich in technique, method, and some innovation too. Through rather concise text and sharp color photographs, including excellent 'step by steps' series and many individual fly plates, he covers: materials for steelhead flies; basic tying techniques; hairwing and featherwing flies; Spey and Dee styles; Practitioners, shrimp and prawn patterns; dry flies and much more. This book is real value for all steelhead fly-tiers.

One of the step-by-step flies is the Knudson White Streamer, shown HERE. ~ JC
