"when the lawyer is swallowed up with business and the statesman is preventing or contriving plots, then we sit on cowslip-banks, hearing the birds sing, and possess ourselves in as much quietness as these silent streams" Izaak Walton, The Compleat Angler 1653

THE SEA-RUN CUTTHROAT

The sea-run cutthroat is the semi-anadromous form of the coastal subspecies of the cutthroat trout (Onchorhynchus clarki clarki); semi-anadromous (or, synonymously, amphidromous) in that, after entering salt water, it stays relatively close to home and will sometimes re-enter fresh water for purposes other than to spawn.

Spezio

I was at the vice on a rainy day and with no fishing available my mind went to a strange place and this is what came out. Bluegill, crappie and bass have taken these flies.

OF ANTS AND MEN

I had fished most of the pre-sun morning working my way downstream to the bridge on a creek that my partner and I had fished a number of times before. Our agreement was I would walk the trail upstream and he would walk downstream where we would then work our way towards the bridge in the middle and meet to compare notes.

AMAZING DAY

We had some warm weather for a few days, and the itch to be out was great. I headed to one of my favorite ponds. I did not take the canoe since I was not sure that I could drive all the way in. Probably best that I did not try as the chances of getting stuck were too great.

AMERICAS TROUT (Town #1)

Over my many years of trout fishing I have discovered many unique cities and towns all within just a short distance of some very acclaimed fishing waters. These towns generally provide all the necessary amenities required by fly fisherman to make your fishing experience a truly memorable occasion. Over the next few months I would like to share with you some of my favorite cities and towns I discovered on my fishing adventures.

TIED IN THE HAND

This is by far one of the outstanding works published in 2012 dealing with Atlantic Salmon Flies. Sven is an outstanding fly tier as the photographs of his flies truly illustrates, but what makes his work more amazing is the fact that he constructs his flies by hand without the use of a vice. I have seen him tie at the British Fly Fair International and his skills are truly remarkable.

FM HALFORD

Frederic Michael Halford, April 13, 1844 – March 5, 1914, arguably one of the most influential figures in fly fishing history. Credited with being the father of modern dry fly fishing practice and theory he cast a long shadow that still can be seen today.

Certainly Halford was not the first fly fisher to use a dry fly, but he was the one that is credited with codifying and popularizing the sport. Halford was born to money and he started fly fishing when he was 24 years of age when, through the generosity of a family friend he was able to fish the Wandle, a river in south-east England, and today runs through southwest London. It is only 9 miles long and ultimately runs into the Thames. It was during Halford's time on the Wandle that he first came across people fishing with a dry fly.

THE FLY FISHING CHRONICLES OF YNP (part 12)

Once upon a time in the magical kingdom of trout there lived a speckled fish called the brook trout. This special trout was desired by all, he inspired the creation of fly patterns and the methods to outwit this special trout. With the proper tactics and imitations thousands of the special speckled marvels were caught and killed. However in those days no one thought that the special trout would ever suffer any change as they never had in previous years. The brook trout inspired the pen of wonderful authors to flow across the pages much like the musical river rambles and glides through the woodland.
