IGNORED OLD FRIENDS

The water is too hard to try to fly fish. It takes way too long to make a trench long enough to fly cast in. I decided that it was time to clean out the fly vest and get the fly boxes rearranged.

TROUT, IMITATIONS & OTHER THOUGHTS

To become skilled and successful at fishing dry mayfly imitations the angler must come to understand the behavior of the trout and how the trout will react to any number of natural and unnatural situations that are encountered.

WE ARE NOT COMPUTERS!

Recently you may have watched the TV quiz show “Jeopardy” where two human contestants pitted their skills against a computer aptly called “Watson.” The computer made the humans look like kindergarten students competing against a college graduate with a PHD in a contest concerning questions dealing with quantum physics.

SIGHT SEEING

Just one of the advantages of being a ‘snowbird’ which we really aren’t - if we wanted snow we would still be in Montana - should have been named Sunbirds, anyway, we get to go and do neat things and see neat stuff. Of course my husband Trav and I are always interested in almost anything about the outdoors, and I suspect as fly fishers you probably are too.

POPOVERS

This one may sound familiar, but it isn’t one of recent popularity, since it isn’t a fashionable diet food. Thank God for something in today’s diet conscious world which not only looks like fun but tastes terrific too.

THE BIKINI SPIDER

This is a simple fish catching pattern that almost anyone can tie quickly and very cheaply. Each fly will take less than 5 minutes, cost less than 10¢ and will be very durable.

UPCOMING EVENTS

TRADITIONAL FLY TACKLE ENTHUSIASTS

The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum will be hosting a new program on May 21 and 22. Billed as a Classic Tackle and Today’s Craftsman the event focuses on the traditional fly fishing tackle, rods, reel, accessories and today’s craftsmen that make them. This event is free to the public
The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum will also be hosting The Hardy Bros. Cup; a casting tournament to be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at the museum’s annual Summerfest. Competitors are required to bring their own bamboo rod, reel and line. The equipment does not have to be a Hardy product, any make or model with a maximum length not to exceed 9 feet is acceptable. There will be a distance element and accuracy element with handicaps for rod lengths and actions.
The Hardy Bros. Cup will remain at the museum and bear the name of the winners. Prizes, provided by Hardy, include a 2011 Anniversary Custom Built C.C. De France classic rod by master maker, Tom Moran for first place, and reels for the second and third place finishers.
