ANYONE CAN DO THIS!

This isn’t really a rant, and if it is, Deanna lets me get away with it about twice a year:-)

I am always amazed that many folks believe that fly fishing is difficult or out of reach or simply for the rich and professionals. For those of you, who are looking to get into the sport, know that it fly fishing is as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

HAIR OR FUR?

More often than not we use the terms hair and fur interchangeably.  But, is there a real difference? Simply stated, there is no scientific distinction. Having hair or fur is characteristic of being a mammal. The hair of different animals is sometimes given different names like whiskers, bristles, quills, fleece or fur.

ASSESSMENT TIME

January 2011, a New Year has dawned upon us. The major holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are behind us, the winter solstices has come and gone and slowly and inexorably the days are getting longer. If the winter solstices has come and gone can spring be far behind?  However, much of the world is in the depths of winter; whether buried in ice and snow or simply dealing with shorter days. This is an excellent time to make an assessment of your angling needs for the upcoming season.

HAVING FUN YET? (Or is fast better?)

There has been a string of comments recently on our Bulletin Board about a new fly rod. No this one really is new, as is radical.

How can you do that? Ray Bauer of Global dorbeR, the designer and builder of the rod, called the Ultra Wave, built a rod with a curve/wave and then put an abundance of guides on the rod to keep the line from wandering and or slapping on the rod which has been known to slow a moving line down. The curve/wave is intended to take some of the work out of casting and make it less work and more fun.

FISHING THE WAVE

Recently there has been a string on the Bulletin Board here on FAOL about a new rod design – The Ultra Wave – currently being offered by Global dobeR Group. This is a radical rod design that has not one but two curves built into the blank. I’m told that is very close to a natural sine wave. [I have no idea what that means but it must be important]

KRATVILLE SALLY

This is a pattern I came up with for Little Yellow Sallies, small terrestrial and big Caddis. This is more of a slow water pattern; not as buoyant as the flies with more foam but a more realistic profile.
