FLY FISHING CUBA

Note: I will mention various products and brand names. This is not a product endorsement. I simply use specifics so you can know exactly which equipment I use.

Back in January 2010, I had changed jobs and I knew that my 2010 salmon fishing would be less active. At the same time, friends got back from a fly fishing trip to Cuba. They turned around and started organizing groups for December.

A MEMORABLE HIKE

There is nothing better than a wilderness backpack trip for testing one's mettle. Mind you, we never actually planned our camping adventures around mettle testing, focusing instead more on the fun aspect of the endeavor.

F.M. HALFORD ON FLY RODS

Halford, considered by many to be the Father of Dry Fly Fishing, published a book entitled “Dry-Fly Fishing in 1889, which is 122 years ago. As I was rereading Halfords classic fly fishing book I was immediately struck by how relevant his information is even today. It was also interesting to note that many of the discussions about two handed versus one handed rods are similar to the discussions that are being made today.

NEW BEGINNINGS

New beginnings are wonderful. There is always a sense of optimism and hope.

Each time we go fishing it's a new beginning. A chance to correct what we did wrong the last time, try a different fly, work on our presentation, fish a new place, extend our horizons. The success of our outing is in our own hands and capabilities to persevere. If we have success we smile, and walk a little taller.

LAST OPEN WATER 2010

It is the middle of November and there is still open water. That means that it is time to go out and get a line in the water. I get everything loaded, including the vest so I have a full assortment of flies to use.

ALASKA BREAD RECIPE

This recipe has been modified form the original that Art Peck gave me while I was in Alaska.
Then my friend, Jeff Hines did some changes.

The above is what I now use and normally bake one loaf per week and have done so for over16 months. I do like it.

ADULT GREEN DAMSEL

Wes Newman brings us the Adult Green Damsel this week.

This Adult Green Damsel pattern is merely an adaptation of the Foam Stone with new material for the twisted body extension. The pattern produces well on rivers and stillwaters  where damsel flies are present.
