FISHING ON SMALL STREAMS

When it comes to fly fishing, I love it all. I certainly have my favorite spots, favorite flies, rods, reels, rivers, streams, and so-on. So, it's with no small amount ofconflict that I dare say my favorite kind of fly fishing is in small streams.

HOT SMOKED FISH - KIWI STYLE

This is an easy and tasty way to make the most out of a fish. I have used a Snapper but you can smoke just about any fish that will fit in your smoker.

MY NEW YEAR'S WISH FOR YOU

In the coming year I wish you prosperity; prosperity grounded in contentment with the things that you have and not the things that are beyond your grasp.

SOMETHING FOR NOTHING

There are certainly exceptions to every rule; Fly Anglers OnLine (FAOL) is free.

You are welcome to share information you find here, to print out fly patterns, the instructions from various Fly Tying series and have them for your own use – or for your club’s newsletter (provided you give us proper credit) and you may also use them for a fly tying or rod building class. However;

LAZINESS DOESN'T PAY

I had a chance to get out go fishing so I went to a pond that I had fished from the shore earlier this year. I wanted to see what I could do when I was out on the water.

I got lazy and grabbed two boxes of flies that have worked well for me this year. It was too warm to be wearing the vest along with the life jacket. I swim like a rock so I have the jacket on whenever I am in the canoe.

THE WIND KNOT -AND- DEAD DECEIVER

In most places winter is at least in sight. Sort of puts a damper on spending too much time in waders hoping the fish haven’t frozen their fins. Even the hardiest of fly fishers figure out it might be wiser to spend their off time indoors.

MICHIGAN STONE

Stoneflies are important biological indicator species. Their presence indicates that sufficient oxygen is present to allow for trout habitation and that the watershed is in good health. They place 3rd on the list of important trout foods, only being surpassed by mayflies and caddis flies.

SOME YEAR ENDING THOUGHTS

At the end of the year it’s a time for reflection on the events that have taken place in the year that is now history and to look forward to the year that is yet to be experienced.

During the last year, the world in which we live has experienced many changes, and FAOL has experienced many changes along with the rest of our society. We have changed physical location – from the coast of Washington to the Yellowstone valley in Montana – and, along with the rest of the economy, we have experienced the financial downturn in the economy that has resulted in the loss of several of our sponsors. For all our sponsors, guides, outfitters, commercial fly tiers and everyone that makes even a small portion of their income from fly fishing we pray the 2011 is a better year for everyone.

We are now in our 14th year and FAOL continues to try to be a place where fly fishers from every walk of life can come together to share information and experiences. [See the Ladyfishers article in the current issue] We are not the most polished or eye-catching fly fishing website on the Internet, but our material is relevant and we think that it meets the needs of the fly fishing public. However, we depend upon our readership to supply the material that we put up on the FAOL website each week. We are not financially able to pay for material and recently we have had a shortage of material from our readers. If this trend continues it will change the face of FAOL in the coming year.

We look forward to hearing from our readers. FAOL is here for you and we are always looking for new material and new ideas from our readers. Together we can make the coming year a positive experience for all of us.
